When showing proof of residency, does it have to be 6 month, or in India's case, 3 months recent stay as a married couple? Or is it possible to use past continuous stays? I was there for work in 2007, and stayed March-October. All advice is appreciated. Just checking other options.

You don't have to be married, but the residency does have to be continuous and immediately before filing.

So if you had been a legal resident for 6 months, then married, you can file immediately. But if you got married, resided for 6 months, then gone somewhere else/ back to the US for a few months, then came back, the clock re-sets and you need to wait 6 months to file.
