According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Don't mess with people in Texas. You break into someone's house, you are target practice and everyone will applaud. There was recently one case where a guy saw his neighbor's house being robbed. the guys were outside the house and he took his shotgun and shot them. They arrested him, but there was such an uproar about it. I think he got off, but I'm not sure. I'll have to check.

what if the "intruder" is a family member?...

A family member is not an intruder.....Most of us are talking about people suddenly appearing in your home, through locked doors.

We have an old Winchester 12 shotgun (passed from my great grandpa on down -- my dad gave it to my hubby) and a Kahr T9. Like, five air guns because hubby likes to target shoot.

I am glad you are safe. My husband works at night so it's just me and our baby until 8am but I make sure that doors and windows were locked and we have a pitbull dog (she's big) so I feel safe somehow and we just installed ADT for additional security.I have a gun also which I'm willing to use to defend myself and my child.Never leave your place with an open door or windows there's a lot of crazy people around.

All jokes aside robberies will only increase under the current economic crisis.

You have to be prepared.

I mean if you heard someone rustling around downstairs.. would you automatically assume it was an intruder?? what if it was your child or spouse??

Shh. You mean that trigger-happy persons may or may not actually be ready to respond to a break-in?

Well my family is white, so if the intruder is black, then I think I can rest assured that it's not a family member. Besides, even my own family wouldn't just walk in the door! I don't keep my doors or windows unlocked ever, so whoever breaks in would make a lot of noise or have a key. My ex-roommate used to keep the front and/or back doors unlocked all the time. I'd either wake up to an empty house or come home to an empty house and everything was unlocked! Drove me crazy! Even after I told him of home break-ins and one rape in the area, he still did this! I work for the police department, so I know what's going on around here. I do live in a relatively safe area, but people get complacent and get the attitude that it can't happen to them so they let their guard down. Criminals take advantage of easy targets, not hard ones.

I think I would know if my spouse or children were home or not or expected to be home. But otherwise, yes, I would instantly be on my guard until I was sure who it was. Nobody is saying shoot at someone before you know if it is your child or spouse. You have to use common sense. Recently one lady was upstairs asleep and she heard someone downstairs in her kitchen. She grabbed her gun, went downstairs and shot the guy. I think the minute she saw him she knew he was not a family member! LOL.
