Obama apologizes for remark

After comparing his bowling to the Special Olympics on "The Tonight Show" Thursday, President Obama called Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver to apologize before the program even aired.

“He expressed his disappointment and he apologized, in a way that was very moving,” Shriver said on ABC's “Good Morning America.” “It’s important to see that words hurt, and words do matter. And these words that in some respect can be seen as humiliating or a put-down of people with special needs do cause pain, and they do result in stereotypes."

Obama told Shriver he wants to have some Special Olympics competitors over to the White House for basketball or bowling.

Special Olympics bowler: I can beat the president!

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The top bowler for the Special Olympics looks forward to meeting President Barack Obama in an alley.

"He bowled a 129. I bowl a 300. I could beat that score easily," Michigan's Kolan McConiughey told The Associated Press in an interview Friday.

The athletic-minded president made an offhand remark Thursday on "The Tonight Show" comparing his weak bowling to "the Special Olympics or something." He quickly apologized and told the Special Olympics chairman he wants to have some of its athletes visit the White House to bowl or play basketball.

McConiughey, who is mentally disabled, is just the bowler for the job. He's bowled five perfect games since 2005.

The 35-year-old McConiughey has been bowling since he was 8 or 9. His advice for Obama? Practice every day

With all that is going on what the heck is he doing making an appearance on Jay Leno? That time could have been used to try to solve the mess we're in.

We finally have a president who can walk and chew gum at the same time thus now he is being critized that he is doing too much!! Yes I know...its hard to get used to! His appearing on Jay Leno in no way kept the economy from recovering any sooner than it will! Geeezzzeee

Did anyone watch the show yet? I didn't see it, so I have no idea what the context was. As I said before he did this, I am not sure whether it's wise for a sitting leader to go on such shows or not. I am of a mind that exposure of this sort is probably less important than say, appearing on a serious political program - if such a thing should exist. I'd really like to see Obama on a program like Parkinson, or Frost. That would be worth watching.

I watched it last night. He was making fun of himself, specifically his bowling. He shouldn't have made the comment, but I highly doubt that any malice was intended. He used a common expression and it was wrong, especially being the President. He apologized and moves on.

Pretty much. I predict 99% of the media and society in general will too. You already know what the other 1% will do.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

First of all, he didn't say "retards" the OP did. He said Special Olympics. Now that doesn't make it better but lets be clear on his comment.

Secondly, lets not pretend that if this was McCain, for example, that people wouldn't have wanted his head on a stick for the slip up. They would and you know it.

Thirdly, yes I'm an Obama supporter and agree with most of his policies. But I don't agree with all of them and I don't think it's unfair to hold him to a higher standard than I would a George Bush. Bush was a clown, always has been and always will be. It doesn't matter what office he held, he was always a #### up. Obama is an exceptional individual and I do hold him to a higher standard. The remark was careless, even if I don't think it was meant as an insult.

Lastly, have you seen the Special Olympics? Have you seen Obama bowl? Then you know that it was a pretty accurate comparison. LOL!

I doubt many people don't recognize his line was a common -throw away line- which had no ill intent.

What some people do recognize is the ever present desire for a "gotcha moment".

Some people seem to get the wink and nod and it passes and others are hounded beyond belief by those who are able to rally the willing media to their cause.

Of course this will amount to nothing (and it shouldn't) but had someone on the right said it.... it would be swirling for a week or two.

It will be swirling for a week or two as-is, once the talking heads in the media start milking it for all its worth.

Are you serious?

Charlie Rose? We have had this style of interview since the campaign began, at some point

we need an interview, not a chat.

It's not that I dislike Rose, he would be perfect for an Ex-president, not a sitting one.
