After embassy approval, can one extend the time limit to leave?

We are expecting mu husband's CR1 interview to be scheduled either for April or May, since the case is now completed at NVC. I am aware that my husband will have 6 months to leave after approved by the embassy, but we would like to know if it is possible to extend those 6 months to about 11 months.

Why don't you just re-schedule the initial interview for a later date, rather than expending an approved visa? It may be easier.
