OK, So my fiance went to his interview in Dublin today.

#1 - The DS-156K they sent him was out of date and he had to go to an internet cafe to get another, so Irish folk beware!

#2 - His name on his birth cert is missing the last 2 letters for some reason, so they sent him to "the passport office" to get some kind of stamp saying he goes by both names, however, when he went to "the passport office" they had no idea what he was talking about. I suspect they meant the INIS office, which was not the place that he went to. What do you guys think?

This just burns me up. He took the train in and it's a one day ticket so he has to go home and sort all this out and probably go back into Dublin on Monday to sort out his birth cert problem. It would be too easy if he got approved with no hold-up! If they had told him the right office in the first place he might have gotten it all done in one day! sigh.

So does anyone know where he should be going to deal with his "wrong name" issue? Thanks!

Ouch - that is why I always go to the source of the forms - they are the freshest...

Hmm, no clue, something about aliases most likely, does he go by two names? (like his BC?)

Is the BC correct? (I mean, was it always like that) or was it just re-issued with the error? I would think you would go back to who issued it to correct the error.

No, his original (!!!) birth cert has the error, as do all the duplicates! So basically his last name is o'crualaoich and his driver's license and passport say that, and his birth cert says o'crualaoi. He does go by two names but they're o'crualaoich and crowley.

Update - OK, so o'crualaoich is a regional spelling, and it's actually correctly spelled o'crualaoi on his AND HIS FATHER'S birth cert! So they just randomly go by a different last name... So I guess I need to know where he can get that little 2nd page insert in his passport that is usually used for Irish/English translation. Anyone?

Another Update: After hours of digging, we finally found one little blurb in the instructions for passport applications that says if you go by a different name than on your birth cert you have to check a box that tells them to put an observation containing your original birth cert name. So he's going to make some phone calls to the Cork Passport Office to see if they'll do it for him. If not he'll just have to apply for a new passport (which seems a bit ridiculous to me but whatever, it's only 10 days).

hxxrmonkey, I was just going to reply telling you about the "observation" of a different name than what is on your birth cert. I recently changed mine to my married name but had them make a note of my maiden name. I'll be very surprised if they don't make him apply for a new passport - crazy I know!

He can do a walk in to Cork if he explains his situation and he can have his passport that day. In saying that, I got mine back within the week so he shouldn't have to wait too long - hopefully though he won't have to get a new passport.

Hey Mand,

Thanks for the advice, we finally figured the "observation" stuff out, the ONLY place we found any info was a tiny paragraph in the passport application! He went to Cork today actually, but they said he didn't have enough "evidence" for it to be rushed and he has to apply for a new passport using the usual 10 day procedure. Normally I wouldn't stress but (of course, derf) I already bought his plane ticket for April 16, so we're going to be cutting it close! He still has to receive the new passport and mail it back to the Embassy and get it back from them! At least his ticket was cheap so I won't mind so much if he misses it or I have to change it.

Update: My fiance picked up his new passport today with the observation in it. It only took 5 days! So he'll be making the flight on Apr. 16th and all is well. :D
