Procedure for permission for child to leave Colombia

Greetings!

With visa appointment date just around the corner, I have just one more hurdle to overcome. My fiance is having the usual bad luck with a jealous father. What is the procedure for leaving with a child out of Colombia, once she finally get consent? And how long in advance does she need the required paper prior to actually leaving at the airport. Would appreciate some guidance. Thanks

She will need to go to a notaría with the father and get his permission in writing and notarized. Make sure the document is very recent, within a few weeks of traveling or the DAS will give her a hard time accepting it and may not allow her to let the child leave the country. Since the child is Colombian, she will have to do this every time they leave the country.

Hey Diana you beat me to it. Yes this letter has to be notorized and as far as I know it can only be done in Bogota. See this link here http://www.consuladodecolombiany.com/new_p...rmisosmenor.htm for info from the Colombian website here in the US. When my step kids left there mom happened to be here in the US. We did the letter and then it had to be stamped only in Bogota which thank goodness they were already going. When the 16 year went back we had to send the letter to a family member in Bogota to get it stamped ( for his dads signature ) so he could leave again and come back to the US.

You can also ask this question in the Colombian thread to see what other members say about it. There's also one in Spanish in the Latin American forum where your fiancé can ask the question in Spanish.

TonyS waiting to hear what you wife has done. Thanks in advance for letting us know.

Is the Father of your step daughter still alive and whereabouts known? Sorry if it is personal however I think it relates to these situations.

Yes my stepdaughter's father is alive and well. We just need a signed and notarized statement from him. I think it must be within 30 days of departure. It was not a easy decision for him. I have a Colombian VOIP plan so he calls everyday when she is here. I feel it is important for her to know Barranquilla and all her family so the plan is for her to visit Colombia very year. Each time she will need permission. I know this may cause issues in the future. Now if the father is where about unknown the the procedure is different. I believe the mother will have to go to the DAS and they will tell her what needs to be done. My understanding is that it involves placing a ad in the local newspaper. I will ask my wife if she could get more information on this subject if this is the case. My stepmother works for DAS in Barranquilla.

The letter is a pain as my step sons are going again in the summer so back to the embassy in New York we go. They will return after us as we do not get months of vacation :) When we did it the inittial time for them to leave Colombia we had the date of the ticket so we placed the exact date. Same thing when the older one went back for Christmas.

Hopefully the father of your daughter keeps up his good work by allowing her to come back.

TonyS thanks and hopefully we have helped the OP

No need to go to the embassy if you don't want to. Your wife can type up a permission letter or find a template of one. My stepdaughter flew to Colombia with her aunt and is returning with her. Her aunt has a tourist visa. My wife typed a permission letter and we had it notarized at AAA. We sent the document to a state government office to have it apostille. Had to pay $25 dollars and it took a week for us to receive it the mail.
