Its really funny that those who appeared to idolise Bush seem to perceive themselves as "getting their own back" for all those comments about Bush's verbal gaffes.

Bush may or may not have relied on a teleprompter but he was definitely coached on what to say by a team of advisors - right down to the phraseology and terminology he could use. Pretty much all world leaders do this (including Obama) - its just that Bush was a lot worse at it and lacked the charismatic showmanship you come to expect in elected officials.

As to Obama's public speaking qualities - I could care less whether he relies on a teleprompter or a sheaf of handwritten notes to give pre-written speeches. The crucial difference between Bush and Obama is that Obama at least seems to understand that he understands the issues to the point that he can provide answers (if political answers) to specific questions asked by reporters.

Bush in contrast could do little more than stammer and throw out the same old jingoisms about "staying the course" and "fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here". for me - when Bush deferred to "the secretary" over that question about whether military contractors are covered by laws preventing torture, that was (IMO) one of the lowest points of his presidency. There was a huge scandal over the treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib, and despite the huge public and media outcry - Bush showed that far from having his finger on the pulse, he had his thumb up his #######.

It got votes, it convinced many, and continues to instill a sense of urgency in people that can do things to improve their world. If the message is true, and people act, then the messenger is what he is. Not everyone is doom and gloom ala Republican't.

Most long speeches by politicians involve the use of teleprompters. Maybe bush should have done too so that he didn't end up sounding like a complete imbecile!

Most presidents since Eisenhower would read from their notes or a teleprompter. The Rethuglicans are trying to make something from nothing and then defending it by saying Dubya was criticized for his speaking skills. It's apples and oranges really - Obama seems to rely on his teleprompter when giving a speech, while Dubya had difficulty with his grammar. Anyone who has seen Obama in personal interviews or even in the debates, knows he has no trouble forming complete sentences and being articulate. Since the question of his birth certificate is no longer taken seriously, the Rethuglicans are desperately trying to focus the American public's attention away from the mess they got us in.

I could care less how well Bush spoke if his policies and actions worked to benefit the country. Unfortunately, they didn't, hence the situation we have today.
