When inflation increases during a period of recession, then the law of supply and demand puts upward pressure on prices, and downward pressure on wages, thereby turning the recession into a depression.

This is sacrilege, but we are still feeling the effects of Reaganomics, and evidently, we still have not learned the lessons. You cannot keep priming the system, and expect things to level out later. It's like an engine that once started on ether, becomes addicted to the ether, until the engine finally fails. A simple tune-up could have fixed the initial problem, but now you are looking at a major overhaul. The economy is long overdue for a rebuild.
