My wife's POE date is Feb 28 and we indicated in our DS-230 that we require a SSN and allowed them to release the info to SSA. Can someone please tell me the approximate time-frame to expect the SSN card?

Thanks,

CJ

The SSA has to wait until the USCIS enters the beneficiary's info in their system before they can issue a number, this can take anywhere from 2-7 weeks. If your wife has not received her green card in the mail yet, then you need to call the USCIS to find out if they entered her info in the system. If they did already and she still does not have her SSN, then you will need to go to your nearest SSA office and pay them a visit.

We submitted the paperwork Dec 22

The ssi office said it was held up by USCIS, needed a EAD first.

Received the EAD today, AP last week.

Who knows how long, idiots in charge.

BTW...we called the SSA hotline and they did not have my wife's record in their system as of last week Thursday. We are planning to pay an in-person visit to one of their local offices. I think, like everything in a govt. org., the DS-230 to SSA process is also random. There is no telling as to when this number will come through.

Hi,

I would suggest you to visit the nearst SS office and fill out an application. Sometimes it takes upto 10 days for immigration to forward the information to SS office. That will delay more.. By visiting the office will give you assurance that your wife will recieve the SS number soon. Takes upto 2 weeks..

Thank you,

I was told I should wait anywhere up to 4-6 weeks to receive my SSN but it turned out to be a lot quicker. My POE was 8/24 and by 8/29 a SSN was automatically assigned to me. I made a visit to the office about 10 days after my arrival and they were able to tell me if/when it had been issued, give me a print out of my number, and confirm the mailing address for which my card was to be sent to.

Like others have said it will depend on how quickly USCIS and the SSA act. But if you want to make a visit to your local social security office about 10 days after POE your details *should* be in the system already.. and if a SSN hasn't been issued automatically you can apply for one using the SS-5 form then & there

We visited the local SSA office yesterday and applied for Anu's SSN. Apparently, even after 30 days they did not have her information in the system. I highly recommend those entering the United States via immigrant visas to personally go and apply for the SSN.

You have to wait untill you information is fowarded to the Department of Homeland Security from you POE . So they can enter it into the SAVE-AVSAP System . Which will then show , you legally entered the USA under your visa , this can take any amount of time . Then checkin too the SSA , and apply for a SSN (make sure you tell them your not asking for employment verification , and you need no EAD , your card must say Not Valid for Work without INS Authorization ). They can check , the status on the computer in the SSA . If you entered into the USA using your Maiden Name , you must apply first for your SSN with that Maiden Name . Then wait untill you get your SSC in the mail (SSA will tell you how long it should take for you too receive your SSC in the mail), if you are allready married before you recieve your card . Go back too the SSA , and do your legal name change .

my wifes POE was 12-30-08, we checked the box on the DS-230 that indicated we wanted a SSN issued....she received her green card but no SS card...we ended up having to go to the local SS office and requested one be issued...I have read that this is common when it comes to SS cards...green card arrived NO problem...we were told she needed to wait 30 days to apply for the SS card...which we did
