i was taught to do that with the hand brake/parking brake when the possibility of rolling back is present.

I'd just roll into the mofos behind me--serves 'em right for riding up my a$$ at the intersection.

and then your insurance pays and your rates go up.

Oh man, I thought I put the smackdown on Charles like pages ago...but the argument continues. Charles, I recommend you listen to Kenny Roger's, The Gambler. Kenny would be saying you should have run after the first post.

refer to post #51 - your smackdown apparently occurred in another ring.

I'll downshift climbing steep hills, but not usually to slow the car. I don't think it's terrible for the clutch, but I'd rather put the wear on the brake pads, though I try not to brake hard either. I've owned two manual transmission cars and replaced each clutch after about eight years, which I think is acceptable.

Of course, he also applies the parking brake at red lights.

oh yeah. I've known some people do that. does he do it only when it's uphill? i think that's something people can do while learning how to drive so they won't let the car go backwards, but after you learn how to control the clutch pedal it's unecessary.

This is what I've always thought. My dad taught me to drive manual, and he would be the one to hold the handbrake just while I was learning. I never used it myself -- once I could find that friction point consistently, everything was fine, even on steep hills. I've never heard of it being required, and if I tried to start using it now, I'm sure it would throw me off and I'd stall out.

I only downshift to second, to 1st with clutch down for a full stop or to pass a bump (quebra-molas) if it's so big I want the car almost at full stop. Even at really low speeds you can start at second so the first is just a full stop gear for me, or a rush hour gear.

Not an expert on cars or transmissions but as far as I know the 1st gear is only there to give the car inertia, it's too strong for anything else, and the sensation of having a car go above 10-20 km/h on first is horrible. Not good at all.

I agree with Nessa, but since I am no expert in transmission I dunno if Charles in totally wrong. I think he is, but oh well. :P

Btw, Nessa, make that 98% of cars in Brasil are manual transmission. To get an automatic transmission up till a few years ago you had to special order it. I've already told Luis that when we buy me a car it will be manual transmission. Period. He doesn't drive a stick and already wonders if he can get an automatic if we move to Brasil.
