I-751: Will my wife need a passport stamp?

My wife came on a CR1 visa in June, 2007. Her conditional resident card (GC) will expire on June 15, 2009. So today we sent her I-751 form along with the necessary documents. But in two weeks we will be going to Vietnam to visit family. Plus, it's for her parents to see their 9th month old grandson. Anyway, we will only be out of the country for the month of April. We will be back a month and a half before her GC expire.

That seems to be enough time. But our travel agent, who have a bit of experiences on travel to Vietnam, said that, although we will not have any problem with US border and custom, the Vietnam's side see that my wife GC is less than three month from expiration and might give us trouble. She suggested that we get a stamp on my wife's passport to extend her GC. Has anyone heard of this before? Can my wife get the stamp even though her GC has not expire yet?

Another question. What if the biometric appointment come in the middle of April while we're out of the country? Is possible re-schedule it?

Thanks.

i doubt they will give you a stamp if your green card is still valid. i would understand if you would have been cuttin it close with the dates but it sounds like u will have ample time before it expires.

you can reschedule the biometrics. its not always advisable but it can be.

Your wife will receive her 1 year extension letter from USCIS just show that letter and her expired green card (her green card is still valid so the extension letter obviously you won't need it if you will be back before her GC expires) at the immigration officer at the airport when you return from your vacation. However, it might cause a problem if you will leave and she will missed her biometrics so maybe just wait 'till she's done with it.I'm going to Philippines too after I receive my 10-yr green card with my 8 month old son but I'm not gonna rush things for now and am still waiting for my biometrics appointment.Goodluck.

If I knew about that one year extension, would have sent in the I-751 15 months rather than 3 months early, that is ridiculous. Even when you one year extension is running out, USCIS gets very touchy if you even apply for an I-551 much before two weeks before that expires.

Don't know anything about VN, but when we traveled to Venezuela, their immigration couldn't care less about wife's green card, was only concerned with her Venezuelan passport and an up to date ID card. Leaving Venezuela was dealing with the US again, then they wanted to see her green card and one year extension before boarding the plane.

We couldn't bring her daughter with us, under 18, and to leave Venezuela, would had to have a letter of permission from her biological father that was living in a different country, even though we have all the papers to proof my wife and full custody. Other problems we had was renewing my wife's Venezuelan passport, what in the hell do you want a Venezuelan passport for when you are living in the USA? I just snapped back even without thinking, we are only here long enough to make a lot's of money, then we are going back, we don't like bush. That worked, but what an awkward situation we are all put in during this long process. But wife has a US passport now.

Hopefully we will get the receipt extension before April. But just to be safe, I booked an INFOPass appt. for Apr. 1, the day before we leave for our trip. We will see if she can get her passport stamp or they tell us it's not needed. Thanks all.
