OK, so I was on my way to Villa Park on Sunday, and as I got off the train at Birmingham Moor St, I witnessed a mass of green parading down the Digbeth Rd. And it got me thinking: why on Earth, if one has no Irish blood in them, should one celebrate St Patrick's day??

And I know it's even worse in America, ffs. OK, the Irish-American communities in NYC, Boston and the like, fair enough, but why does everybody else pile on the bandwagon? As an Englishman, I find it particularly irritating, because a large swathe of my fellow countrymen that get right into all thing's Paddy's, couldn't even tell you when St George's day is. In fact, I'm gonna tell anyone else that wishes me "Happy St Patrick's Day" today, and doesn't know when St George's day is, to #### right off.

St George was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious.

Because you can drink all day and no one looks at you weird. And there are a lot more Irish-American communities than the ones you listed. Where I live, everyone is either Irish or German ancestory. Lots of people celebrate holidays that aren't in their culture. It's fun and everyone likes a celebration. Stop being such a gloomy gus and go have a green beer.

I don't mind people celebrating St Patrick's day, even if they aren't Irish and it's true, a lot of it stems from those Irish emigres. What I find funny about it though, is what people who celebrate the day consider to be Irish. Green pints for one, that makes me laugh

Fair play to you on your knowledge of St George, but then as a Russian (or at least married to one) I'd expect nothing less.

Is it just like people think Christmas is about santa? People aren't doing it because it's Irish, they are doing it because its fun. Why does fun have to be historically/culturally correct?

Well, for me, the day holds "fond" memories of colliding with central reservation on M25 and shutting it down for a brief period of time. So I'm just glad to be alive.

From then on, I drive more carefully on St. Paddy's Day .

If you take the Irish part out of the fun, what are you doing? Enjoy it how you like, but I will still laugh at those who use non Irish customs to celebrate St Patrick's day because I think that is pointless.

I just stepped outside the office for some lunch and found the streets of NYC packed with revelling idiots. from what I understand st. patricks day was meant ot be a sombre occaision where pubs and the like closed...if that is true...what happened?
