The starter was just replaced last year; I can't remember if it was a new or rebuilt one. The battery keeps testing at 14v (I think) which is over what it's rated at. When you try to turn on the car you can hear it spin but it's not catching. The "hard to start" condition started when I went to start the car Thursday morning.

I sense tension.

That's an understatement.

Tap on the stater first, then see if it catches. Whoever installed the starter may have left out a shim.

I'm totally in agreement with the portapotty lobby. (well, not a lobby made from portapotties...but you know what i mean). I find it incredible that your boss hasn't done that already.

They have shut our water off for a day or two at a time and we go down the street to Hardees but they've started commenting on the number of people coming in there just to use the bathroom. There are only two of us that live close enough we can go home (with a car) to use the bathroom. I hope they get a temporary solution worked out quickly because the boss is leaving this week and will be gone for a month.

Can you turn the boss's office into atemporary facility while he is gone? Perhaps a five gallon pail and a toilet seat duct taped on? Replace the buckets as necessary, and leave them in his office.

gmta! I was just about to write something like that!

Liefde is een bloem zo teer dat hij knakt bij de minste aanraking en zo sterk dat niets zijn groei in de weg staat

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Ha, tap on the starter with what, a sledge hammer? Does that fix the problem if that is indeed the problem? The Japanese consider the Americans idiots, even too stupid to clean a tape head with a cotton swab, so they give us a very ineffective head cleaning tape instead. You know what? I agree with them, too many Americans are idiots.

tell him "arbeit macht frei"

Never learned German....online translation doesn't really make sense to me...

"work will make you free"....but don't say that to him, it has ...hmmm...historical significance.

nah sister cassi, just leave the mass hordes of do-gooders alone here..as they will defamed the man you married and in the end, nothing good can come of it.///

I was joking and yelling at him would not be a do-gooder act-I need to yell at someone today-totally self serving....

jk

never aimed at you brother.......i know, the hordes of ' do-gooders' will come and lay the gentlemen in question, into ashes ..

and sister cassi..keep the angry at him, between your and him..and try and communciate better..

as in the end, no good will come of internet views/opinions of him ...no charge..dr. dean

 good advise.

( but you called me brother.... :crying: )

:blush::blush::blush::blush::blush::blush::blush: sorry brother...i am such a chopf##k

Sometimes the solenoid sticks. Tapping it with a hammer can free it up. It's an old fix, but temporary if you have to keep doing it. If the starter is remanufactured, they often supply a shim so the drive gear will properly engage the ring gear. It could also be a worn spot in the ring gear, or a worn drive gear.

My dad was a Electrical Mechanic and believe it or not that trick worked 9 out of 10 times when it came to the starter.

Speaking of Japanese cars, my wife's brand new civic is having a similar problem with the starter. It occurs quite randomly where every now and then when trying to crank it over, you hear the starter just spinning up without doing anything.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

You're right, it could be a missing tooth on the flywheel gear. If so, putting the car into 4th gear and rolling it a few feet would turn the flywheel in a stick transmission car, and allow for starting. Still think it's more likely a worn out solenoid. Solenoid could have burned insulation on the windings, or a worn out guide bushing so the steel core is not suspended free in the field and drags when a little off kilter.

I don't speculate on car problems, just go out, find the problem and fix it. Just a couple of weeks ago, my step-daughters" car stalled on her with a dead battery, AAA towed it to a local shop and wanted 800 bucks to repair it. I called my AAA and got the car towed home, took me a couple of hours to troubleshoot and ten bucks worth of parts, and the job was done right. Last year, some idiot contractor broke the water main, called the mayor and we had water in four hours.

I had a similar situation involving state inspections and my wife's 2006 accord. The head mechanic came out and told me that the brakes were gone and needed replacing. Now we have a joke back in Aus that Honda parts cost more than Porsche parts. So he quote a few hundred bucks to change them and insisted I do it there and then. I have a bad reputation with mechanics so I said to him I am going to look at those brakes myself. So I purchased some high performance brakes and replaced them myself. Surprise Surprise the existing brakes had nothing wrong with them. Nonetheless, the new brakes were better anyway. I haven't seen this mechanic as I still have the existing pads to shove them up his ####.

Car dealers and the service departments give me the shits here. They are just such con / bullshit artists. anything to make the sale with very little protection for the a consumer who does not know what they are doing.
