i dont have problems with anyone but i admit that there are particular cultural traditions from many parts of the world that i dislike/hate/dont understand/dont want to be near.

does that make me a racist?

It's normal as long as you keep it inside. As big of a biased person against these latinos, I never once have ignored their plea for help when they need to jump start their car, or help looking over one of their kids when they work overtime.

No - it was a few years ago in the UK. I was out late walking to a friends house and there was a girl a few hundred yards ahead of me on the same street. She kept looking behind her every so often - and eventually broke into a run.

It might not have been that - but I can't imagine why else someone would behave like that.

I could be assuming too much from it - but it was strange. There was noone else out on the street - so the only thing she could have been looking at over her shoulder was me.

That sounds like something I would do, although I've never felt justified enough to start running! But when I'm alone and there is someone walking up behind me (especially if they seem to be coming up on me quickly), then I would start feeling a bit nervous and keep looking to see where they are behind me. Then again, if I started running then I'd feel really silly...unless of course they started running after me. :help:

but i don't let my grievances prevent me from talking to people and helping them out. however, in as far as "keeping it inside"...why? why is it wrong to express your opinion?

and why does expressing your opinion has to necessarily mean you hate the entire cultural group? if you see stupid and wrong things happening, i would think that it'd be best to raise your concerns.

If you read the book Blink, you'll find out most people are some what raciest. Even the author (who is half black) found out he was a little raciest towards black people! There is a website that shows faces and words and you have to make association and it "tests" your level of racism by checking response times.

I took that test. It told me I was completely and totally not racist.

As for the poll....

Yes, I am openly racist.

No, I am not racist in my heart.

As a female, I always feel more concerned if I'm walking alone somewhere and there is a guy/group of guys around. I've also never felt the need to start running, but I think it's natural for females to be concerned when they're alone.

I will say that I didn't see the original post or its context, and only read what's right here, so I may have missed part of the context.

I admit to having certain stereotypes in mind, though not always or necessarily due to race.

No and no.

I think a lot of racism is just culture clash. The REAL idiots out there are the ones who are prejudice on skin tone alone (hate groups, etc). :dead:

I agree. Those who overlook an individual's crimes/flaws/personality due to his/her race really annoy me. Those who excuse someone for stealing/killing/being lazy/etc because of the hardships their ancestors had, and/or because of the heavy burden of racism, and/or because they are "under-privileged" irk me beyond belief.

Much better to look at people as individuals, with individual potential, individual history, etc. than to always see them as their race/nationality.

Most people on VJ chose to be with someone from a different country and race. I don't think most here are racists

they are not racist with that particular group their SO is from.. doesn't mean they aren't racist with the other races

No you can be married to someone of one ethnic group and still be racist towards members of that same group (including the spouse).

The old "I married a black woman ergo I cannot be racist" argument is just BS.
