I'M HAVING TAX NIGHTMARES !!! :crying:

I work in Qatar. I am planning to DCF in about 3 weeks

If I file married filing separately how bad will that look at the interview ? I am planning to DCF in about 3 weeks

I I file married filing jointly and the spouse did not have any income what do I have to attach to show that the foreign spouse didn't have any income ?

It's almost April and I can't figure out what to do. It doesn't help that in the past H&R block did my taxes. Now I'm in a foreign country, with no help, and tax stupid :bonk:

in order to MFJ your spouse needs a SSN or ITIN... since your spouse is not work authorized is therefore ineligible for a SSN... ITIN is your only solution for this... google "Form W-7"

YMMV

I also plan to file married but separate. Does this really look bad? I mean, if we've enough evidence of relationship and enuf income, do they really care whether we file as separate or joint? Also, do you need ITIN if we're filing as married but separate?

I filed married but seprately. Sad to say most U.S. couples do it that way anyways, even though they are not doing the USICS process like we are all here.

Truly happy!!!

New life, new adventures, and a new attitude.

queuedup

That information is absolutely false. My husband was in Peru for all of 2007 when I filed our tax return as Married Filing Jointly for 2007. We did the paper work to get the W-7 and wrote the affidavit they wanted for him to be considered a US Resident for tax purposes. I turned in the tax papers, the W-7, and the affidavit to the local IRS office. I also had his passport, his birth certificate, and our marriage certificate. He received his ITIN and then we received our tax refund. No problems at all. Maybe you should consult another person. You are not single.

Que, your wife is eligible for ITIN. I called IRS myself to check it out because we plan on filing MFJ at first. I already had my passport certified by DFA so that he could file 1040 with W-7 but when we received NOA2, we decided to have him file as single because of AOS/tax returns issue and ammend it later on.

last year we tried the w7 way, (twice) i filed joint but they would never issued him the number and no reason was given, they amended on their own to sgl and lowered the return and no stimulas.

Now this year he is here, with social number, i did this years taxes, she put in the the last years stimulas since i never got it, andi can go back and redo last years, so it can turn into a mess. I would file just as for you, then amend later it will save alot of hassle and time. I believe she said u can amend for 3 years back
