I've never had a car loan, so I know zero about this, but I do have a question!

When we presented our car at the border for import, when we went to register it in Florida, we presented our car registration - there is no 'title' as such in Alberta - your registration is your title.

So I'm thinking you other canaliens have real 'title' papers?

Is the difference that on some title papers the 'owner' is the lien holder?

I think I may have misinformed you lilacvioletiris, and if so, I sincerely apologize. The more I think of it, the more I'm sure that what I was thinking of was the importing of a leased vehicle, and not just one that had an outstanding loan. I'm so sorry!

Yes Nova Scotia has Title Papers that they give you, (feels like the paper they make money out of LOL) They give it to you and say "This is your title and do not to keep it in your vehicle but in a safe place as you don't need it again till you sell or transfer the vehicle. The Lien Holders name did not appear on mine though. Then they give you a permit , a smaller piece of regular paper that your suppose to keep in your vehicle. Has the same info as the title, but adds your plate number on it. I know the registration they gave me here is Wisconsin was a title, sort of, you tear off the bottom portion to keep in your vehicle. She searched my VIN # and printed off a piece of paper for me to sign, "NO LIENS" on it. I signed as I knew that the next day I was going in to pay off the car. I think its the same thing, just called something else. As when you bring your paperwork into the registry of motor vehicles they say, "oh your registering your car...and then when they give you the paperwork they say this is your title, this is your permit. Have I totally confused you...I almost confused myself writing this! LOL

Mathew wants to bring his 2004 Toyota Corolla down with him whenever he moves. The car never had a loan or anything as his dad paid cash for it. But the car is in his dads name.

He's going to have to get that transferred isn't he?? Hopefully that part will be free. I know when my dad put his old car in my name they didn't charge anything because it was a family transfer.

I bought my Dad's car for a nominal amount and transferred the title. I think in all it was about $400 for the title transfer. This was through Ministry of Ontario.

But if it was a gift, it wouldn't be the same, right? Mathews dad bought the car for Mathew. It's just always been in his dads name.

At least down here in the U.S., transferring a car through gift is free. I'm not sure about Canada though.

I would say in all provinces here there will be a fee.

Wow that Ontario price is high! Here in Alberta, regardless of how the 'sale' is made, whether you sell if for $1 to a family member or not, you still have to transfer the registration - that is where the cost comes in - but it's no where near $400.

Wow, that's crazy. But, what has to be done, has to be done. He needs that car. I guess we wont really know for sure until he and his dad go to change the stuff over.

My Dad gave me a car many moons ago. There is no fee in Ontario for a gift from family. :)

For anyone with a Mazda that wants to import it to the US.

I just called Mazda and they directed me to their website to fill out a form to be faxed in.

The form can be found here: http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/pdf/faq/us...mp_exp_form.pdf

The message said that you will get your letter in 10 business days while the form says it takes approximately 20 days. It also looks like they email it to you unless you specify otherwise. Best part, it looks like there is no charge!

Your dealer might not issue a letter of compliance if you still have a lien on it with them.

Nissan for sure won't if you still owe money, not sure about the other companies.

I didn't see anywhere that recall info is needed to Import your car. It is my understanding that it is only needed if you are Importing a car into Canada, not into the US although some manufacturers send both. So, no I didn't ask for it.
