Its not that difficult to understand.

For one thing - I believe HIV/AIDS transmission is more prevalent among African Americans and that they are more susceptible to the infection.

Intravenous drug use is prevalent in economically deprived inner city areas.

Guess who tends to live in the aforementioned economically deprived inner city areas.

I think there's a lot of reasons why its so prevalent in Africa. Its partly cultural, but there are also competing agendas at work with the provision of sex-education. The World Health Organisation was harshly critical of the Catholic Church a few years ago for the behaviour of some of their missionaries - who were reportedly burning boxes of condoms and safe sex literature, and spreading rumours among already superstitious populations that condom use is evil.

I just read the actual report and the rates of transmission is huge among ALL sectors of the population which for a virus implies mutation beyond the current transmissability rates and worsening socioeconomic aspects with one common denominator: ignorance. Perhaps there are other factors our selective boldings ignore? Surely say it ain't so!

High incidence of malaria (which is endemic in equatorial africa) has a direct effect upon susceptibility to HIV transmission. An individual with history of malaria has a much lower exposure level requirement for contraction. Hep C (increasingly common in lower income populations in US urban environments) is anther transmission enabler. Either make transmission via heterosexual intercourse 40-60 times as likely in a single incidence of contact (intercourse). Herpes also enables transmission, though not to the same degree.
