Biden, The Amtrak VP, Praises Rail Funds In Stimulus

UPDATE: Here's the audio.

Vice President Joe Biden was in his element this afternoon as he joined former Congressional colleagues to trumpet funding for passenger rail in the stimulus funding. Saying he's in the top five of Amtrak riders of all time, the former Delaware senator said the system has been "left out much too long" in the nation's transportation plans, despite claims that it is over-subsidized.

"Every, every, every, every passenger rail service system in the world relies on subsidies. We subsidize our highways and airports more than we subsidize Amtrak," he said at Union Station this morning. "So let's get something straight here: Amtrak is not bent at the trough. Amtrak has been left out. ... I'm tired of apologizing for help for Amtrak."

Biden used to ride the train to and from Wilmington most days when he served as the state's senator for six full terms. One of the projects in the stimulus plan is a $21 million renovation of that station, and another $105 million will be spent on renovating Amtrak facilities nationwide. Also included: $82 million to fix damaged rail cars, $63 million to upgrade the electricity pathways, and $10.5 million for a new station in Sanford, Fla. Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla) was among those on hand thanking the veep for his role in securing the funds.

"If you have any problems in the stimulus, call the po-po. That's Joe Biden!" she said, declaring the group part of "Team Amtrak."

A number of the senators who spoke made light of their former colleague's promotion to Vice President, with his former longtime aide Ted Kaufman, now serving in his old seat, joking that he has to think twice before he addresses Biden. Biden himself joked that for the first time, his senators have no choice but to listen to him speak. "My speech will take no longer than 60 minutes," he promised.

So comfortable with the group was Biden that he was heard using the f-word a little too close to the open mic as he greeted them. Of course, his predecessor was caught doing the same, but in a more negative context.

Biden isn't right in the head.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

126 million for renovations of amtrack facilities, and of that about 1 out of 5 dollars going to biden's home station.

renovate biden's station at 21 million, and build a new station for 10.5 in florida?

More Political BS.

Biden: " We subsidize our highways and airports more than we subsidize Amtrak,"

When one calculates total dollars, he is correct.

When one calculates dollars subsidized x riders benefiting, it's a whole other story.

What percentage of people use amtrak compared to roadways?

This is literally close to 150 million dollars flushed down the toilet.

Well not exactly in the toilet... as that money will run the usual chain of sticky fingers.... making a few rich folk even richer.

One thing that disturbs me is that with one railroad line after another being dismantled, is that the right away is divided and sold.

If one looks at the history of this country, these railroads were built first and in any direction. The towns were built after. Practically all of our township and county roads, and most of our state roads either run north/south or east/west. So going from one town to another, have to take the side adjacent to the side opposite of a right triangle, instead of the hypotenuse that is the most direct route to the next town.

Railroad right aways are at least 100 feet wide, have limited grades of 3% or less, fenced off, and the perfect spot to build a two lane highway that can save as much as 30% of wasted travel between towns, they are letting all this go to waste.

Roads were never a good idea either, has to be a smooth surface requiring huge amounts of maintenance, still don't understand why most cities run water and sewer lines down the middle of the road, always detours. And the friction between a rubber tire and the road surface is a constant problem in the snow belt areas. It was originally proposed in this country to develop a monorail overhead system that was far more intelligent with individual vehicles for each person. Such can be powered with electricity and the vehicles could be made far more streamlined at a much lower weight. And a simple shield over the rail can protect it from ice and snow eliminating the need for snowplows and tons and tons of road salt. Farmers could grow crops underneath maintaining the environment.

Trains and planes are stupid, requiring a large mass of people to gather in one small spot, are very inconvenient with huge parking spaces that cause global warming, and never a schedule that satisfies your needs. Bringing back railroads that failed for this reason sounds idiotic as does building a plane that can carry a thousand passengers. Would hate to deal with immigration and customs in that plane.

Was three years ago, my wife had to make monthly trips to various hospitals as part of their network, as far as 120 miles, lost a full days of work, plus they had to pay over a half a buck a mile for transportation, and was hazardous during the winter months. Today, it's all video conferencing with full wall projectors, just like being there.

Rebuilding a high speed railroad between Chicago and the Twin cities seems very stupid, either town is laying people off like crazy, how would that help the economy? There are much better ways.

Our interstate system is also stupid, constantly merging four lanes into two, didn't anyone realize that is going to cause a bottleneck?

Wow. so much stupidity. Where were you to prevent this from happening and to do it the right way?
