The 912 Project from a liberal mom's point of view

Earlier in the week, my extremely conservative mother asked me what I thought about Glenn Beck and his 912 Project. I had no clue what she was talking about. I have heard of Glenn Beck but have never watched his show. To be frank, FOX News is not a channel we use in this house. My mother, bless her heart, tried to explain what this movement was about but ultimately made it sound as though people were forming mini-militias and heading to Washington D.C. to overthrow the government. I admit, my interest was picqued.

I forgot about it until yesterday when I remembered my parents wanted to attend a rally in San Diego (where they live) to help support the 912 Project. I started looking into it, my liberal mind all set to reject and denounce it as bitter grapes from a broken political party. I was actually pleasantly surprised, if not a little stunned, by what I discovered on the 912 Project website (when it wasn't crashed by the server because of insane traffic volume).

In case you, like me, are unaware of what this is, let me give you a brief outline. The 912 Project is a movement based around 9 principles and 12 values. It's not an attempt to overthrow the government (I think) but rather an attempt to bring Americans together and give likeminded citizens a place to share their thoughts, positive and negative, about the country. The principles are simple, from "America is good" to "It is not un-American for me to disagree with authority or to share my personal opinion." The 12 values range from humility to personal responsibility. The website has a forum to allow people to share their concerns about the country and where it is headed, and as you might expect given these tough economic times, many people are sharing their concerns.

So how does this liberal mom view the project? Well, I kind of like it. I read through the 9 principles and agreed with them, although not in the way that conservative do. While I do think that "I work hard for what I have and I will share it with who I want to. Government cannot force me to be charitable.", I also wonder what would happen to those people that would not be helped by the charitable contributions they receive from the government. Yes, I'm tired of people working the system and abusing it. But I also think that for every person that does that, there is another person who is trying as hard as they can to do right and still can't make ends meet or catch a break. Do we throw that person to the wayside? Is that what I would want to teach my children?

Given that I agree with many of the statements, does this make me less liberal than I thought I was? Am I happy with the direction this country is heading? No. But I also feel like the new president needs to be given a chance to get things back on track. It hasn't even been 100 days. On the other hand, I do think it wouldn't be so bad to bring God back into schools (let's face it, separation of Church and State just doesn't exist so why should it in the schools?) or to focus on family values more.

I'm sure many reading this will think, "She's not liberal at all." Maybe I'm not. Maybe I'm more of an independent person. But you know what? Thank God I live in a country that lets me think what I want, express what I want, and teach my children what I want.

I watched the Glenn Beck show when he promoted this 912 project - it really seems like he is simply saying Americans needs to get back to the values and principles that made the USA what it was always about, recommending a book which gives and explains the founding fathers principles for America.

As I understood it he is promoting the return of concepts like accountability, honour, integrity, honesty which has been sadly lacking in certain areas. Today I heard that AIG announced bonus payments to be made to employees and the response from the listening public seems to be that when offered the intended receipiants should decline them. It seems a fair concept that bad management should not be rewarded with bonus's - where's the incentive to do well?

People need to understand - it doesnt matter what your political leanings are... this is about something much bigger - people need to stop being worried about what other people think and concentrate on "doing the right thing". I would recommend watching the episode if you can - As for bringing God into the arena - do not forget why the pilgrims fled to the shores of America - to escape religious oppression so how can you not bring it in?

He also wants to empower the people - "you are not alone".... and he is right - the government works for the people not the other way round. One of his remarks that really struck home for me is one I use all the time " Say what you mean and mean what you say"
