Question about CCTB w/ one spouse in the US

Im not really at this point yet, but want to be prepared.

Once DF and I get married, since he is a USC and hasnt lived/worked in Canada, what do I do when it comes to my RC65 (change of marital status)? Is it going to change my amount from CCTB with his US income (hes not bio dad)? Or does his US income not count? Not sure how all this is going to pan out, with the government, when they ask for my spouse's SIN # and he doesnt have one, and how benefits are going to work

Call your MPs local office, explain to them what the situation is and will be and ask them to check with CRA on your behalf. You will probably have to sign an authorization sheet for them to investigate but they should be able to get you the correct answer from the 'horse's mouth'. They have special contacts at CRA whose sole jobs are to answer inquiries and requests from MPs.

I am going through the same thing and this is what I have been told. You have to file a change of marital status and yes his income will count in the calculation of the CCTB. You will get the same benefit until the end of June and then it will be based on both your income whether he made the money in Canada or the US. You send in the change of marital status and then you they will send the information you need to declare your spouses income. I am still waiting for these papers. Let me know if you find out different. I found of all the calls I made that I got a lot of different answers. It was very annoying.

Once you move to the US, your Child tax benefit is gone regardless....interesting that the Cdn gov will include the spouses income even though you are maintaining separate residences. Let everyone know what you find out, be good info for someone else.

I will update and let you know what I find out when I find out something. Due to financial reasons, we probably will not be living together for some time so I will learn first hand how the Canadian government deals with the CCTB and an American spouse.

I called today and kept getting different answers.

One said I have to file the RC65 right away when I get married and include proof of his US income so they can re-calculate my benefits.

But both said that the RC65 has to be sent in right away after a marital status, or else if your recalucation means you are getting less.. then you are going to owe back pay to CCTB from the month following you got married.

I would say go the honest route, file the form add a letter explaining that although married, your spouse does not live with you and lives in a seperate country. That will help them understand his lack of SIN.
