Hello Ladies...I need a little help. Well, a lot actually. I'm a 27 year old who has never worn makeup. NEVER. I don't know how to put it on, what to pick, what goes with what. I'm looking for advice, tips, anything you are willing to give me. I'm going to see my honey soon and he's never seen me in makeup...neither have I for that matter! Anyway, I have a darker complexion as you can see in my display photo. I came here because I thought that I'd have the best chance of finding someone who knew how to put make up on a complexion like mine...I guess that remains to be seen (I do realize that black folks come in all colors). Anyway, any help would be appreciated! And I do realize this is a rather odd request for a person of my age but what can I say. Thanks in advance!

Tasha :D

Right on Dani! I would advise you to check out any MAC counter or Lancome for that matter. The makeup artists in any mall could help you. They are great at giving you trials at the counter itself too. The catch - try to at least buy a product. They are sales on top of being makeup experts too. Happy hunting!

I would also go to a cosmetic counter and ask for advise and a trial make-up. And if the catch is to buy a product, then go for a nice lipstick. I wouldnt go and spend a fortune on make-up...natural beauty is still best, and it comes from within.

I know that Fashion Fair, Iman, and Black Opal make some really good make up for women of color, and if you google these and look on the website's, I am sure that you will find a department store that carries these products (Macy's, JC Penny's, or Dillards I believe). I have heard that MAC is good also.

maybe I am not qualified because I am white but I think a lipstick that would draw attention and then nice lashes and even though it isn't really makeup , something in your hair to add color and frame your face would be good ( and less fussy than makeup ) .

I have worn MAC for years and love th product line, I refuse to give up my MAC lip color and lip glass. But, I recently tried the Bare Minerals and love it; it allows for alot of creativity and it comes with all of the brushes for the products included in the kits. You can try the starter kit and brow kit.

Even when you don't feel like putting on a full face arched darkened eyebrows and tinted lip glasss bring out a good complexion.

I don't wear a lot of make-up either (and I'm fair), but I think people always look better if they put a little powder on their face. Just to even out the skin tone and so your face doesn't shine. You could also try a mary kay salesperson. My mom got me this powder/base foundation, which is a little creamy and applies with a sponge, and yet isn't heavy like a lot of foundations. mary kay isn't as expensive as some of the store brands, yet you still get someone who will let you try on some stuff. also, i wore that foundation stuff in Morocco often, and it didn't smear or sweat in the changing temperatures over there.

other than that, i'm a big fan of curling my eyelashes. I don't use mascara (it's gross!).

have fun and i'm sure you probably won't need it. the flush of love and after a little necking the flush of lust will make you gorgeous!

Thanks so much for the replies. All of the advice is great!. I didn't even think to go to a mall to get help...it didn't even cross my mind. I go home tomorrow so some time in the next few days I'll try that out. I am also going to go looking for some celebrities to try to find colors. That was a great idea. I'm a pretty natural type of girl so I'm looking for something like that. I don't really want to look like I am wearing anything.

We_Destiny - have you ever heard of B.l.a.c. Minerals? I was interested in Bare minerals because of all of the infomercials (they are so addictive) but when I looked in up online there wasn't much variety for complexions...In my opinion. I stumbled across www.blacminerals.com and they have tons of options. If you get a chance to check it out tell me what you think of them.

actually, anyone who uses mineral makeup...what brands do you use and how does it feel. I really don't want anything heavy...just to look a little more polished.

Well, thanks again...and I'll be back to see if any more ideas pop up :D

Honestly they offer a variety of colors but you need to go to Ulta or Sephora in JC Penny to be able to sample the colors that are best for you.

Whatever route you decide to go GOOD LUCK!!

Tasha, I was late to wear make up too. Don't be ashamed! I don't like to wear lots of make up (foundation, powder, etc). I like to keep it simple. The basics would be mascara eye color (two color palate- put the darkest shade on the bottom of you eyelid closests to the lashes and the lighter shade above), lip gloss & lip pencil/lipstick. You can get by with a casual look with eye color and lip gloss; to dress it up add mascara, lip stick/pencil, and eye liner. You can use liquid or pencil eyeliner. Starting out I would recommend pencil its a little easier to control and a little more subdued.

I started off at the MAC counter. They do free make up with a $30 purchase. I bought 2 lipsticks and go the rest of the stuff from walmart. Its nice because you get to learn techniques, you don't have to buy everything they recommend, and they are very helpful in picking colors what would go well with your skin. Best of luck!

hello to you, I'm gonna chime in here although you have been given some excellent advice {kudos WE_Destiny for the eyebrow/lipstick mantra,

can nevahh go wrong with that advice :thumbs: }

I personally use earth tone eye shadows and shades of blue {electric} eye liner, works well for me. I don't really use foundations unless there is some gala event to attend  , other than that I use a deep shade bronzer for an all over facial finish and to top it off, I moisturize my lips, put on a earth tone/natural contrasting lip liner and a dramatic shade of lip color. I go this route because I truly believe in accentuating the positive and reinforcing the natural beauty that God has given me. I hope this helps and along with all the other advice given you so that you can find your inner diva and allow her to shine through. :star:

I am all that the Potter created me to be.

I celebrate, liberate and dedicate my life to His Glory.

I Am Uno!
