A question for you guys. I really want to be able to watch the Swedish tv channels play versions on the internet. I keep getting a message that I'm in the wrong region (like I got in Sweden for American stuff) but a friend of mine who lives in Minnesota does not have that problem and doesn't think she has changed any setting anywhere or anything like that.

Any of you have a solution for me?

I'm sure someone has a better solution to it, but I use a proxy to watch American and British shows in Denmark. Some of the sites can detect it though (like Netflix).

Like Nola said, you'll need to go through a proxy to change/make the website you want to access think you're accessing it through an ip address for the country in question. There are lots out there either for free (which generally have some sort of advertising linked on the pages and can slow down viewing) or paid services (without advertising). To access Swedish pages need to find one that allows you to pick a Swedish ip address (or any other country you're interested in). A good place to find proxy reviews is on cnet.com.

On a side note, you'll notice a difference in available content when you change the country ip because of licensing issues. For example, Netflix will have different movies/shows available in its US portal than in the Denmark (or Sweden) one.

Are you and your friend trying to watch the same shows?

One thing I personally noticed with NRK and streaming to the US is that none of NRK's original (or egenproduserte) content gives me any issues. However, all their programs that they have licensed from someone else give me a, "wrong region" error and I need to use a proxy.

I watched Pa Sparet (man I can;t wait to set up my own computer so I can start typing like a normal, civilized person again - sure miss all the umlauts) on my smart phone. I downloaded an SVT Play app. I could not watch An Idiot Abroad though, I'm thinking that's probably because SVT's own programs, like Pa Sparet, they can broadcast anywhere cause they own the copyrights) but An Idiot Abroad is, I think, a BBC program, so SVT can't broadcast it in other places than Sweden/Scandinavia. I have heard of a channel called SVT World or something, but I haven't checked it out.

Some routers allow you to connect to a VPN (Virtual private Network) so you would essentially be using that router as a proxy. If any of your friends in Sweden have a router with this functionality you can connect to their VPN (Once they have set it up) when you want to watch Swedish shows.

You can get the umlauts on all computers, you just have to fiddle with the settings. On our main computer I can now chose if I want to type in English or Swedish, the last 3 letters of the Swedish alphabet aren't showing on the keyboard and everything move places so it took a while to figure it out but at least i got em now!

And on cell phones and ipods and ipads. I switch between an English and a Danish keyboard all the time on my things without a problem, especially when I am typing in Danglish as the phone and ipad autocorrect in the language you've set the keyboard too.

I don't know if it is the same with the Swedish keyboard, but the @ symbol is tricky to remember, especially on my Mac. The other ones are fairly simple, they just move the ?, -, ' keys, shift the numbers the symbols over the numbers, and {:" are å æ ø .

I can switch back and forth between English and Norwegian on my keyboard too. The Norwegian letters æ, ø and å don't show on the keyboard obviously, but I have pretty good keyboard memory so it's not a problem.

NRK and SVT are gov't funded, and very few (if any) of their own shows are ever sold to be broadcasted in the US, so there are no regional restrictions. Any show produced by a third party (like BBC) that are sold to NRK/SVT, are sold with rights to show them in Norway/Sweden only.

I've memorized the alt codes for æ, ø and å. XD I don't type that much in Norwegian on my computer anyway, so no need to enable a whole other keyboard.

Not to mention all the cross country skiing! Svt has no rights to air that in America so Svt play always says Wrong Region for that too!!

But after a lot of agony i found a page on the Internet that let me watch eurosport online so i could at least watch tour de ski!!

Oh, I suppose that works too! Actually, even being the American in our relationship, I use Danish quite a bit and just use the Danish keyboard to type in English, so there isn't that much switching back and forth on a regular laptop. I also text with my husband's family in Danish and my last name and address requires the å, but I suppose that will change when we move to America and it gets transcribed to aa.

I brought two Swedish keyboards for my Mac. My wife is getting a laptop when she gets her income tax back. At that time I'll set up my Mac where she has her PC now. I write on a blog for people back home to read so they can keep up to what I'm doing, but I can live with typing without the umlauts for the time being. I will be very happy once I get "back to normal" though.

My wife gave me her old smart phone and bought a new one for herself and added me to her plan. She set "my" phone up so I can use both an American and a Swedish keyboard on it.

Blogging is a good outlet. ;)

I had recently bought an adorable new smartphone in Denmark, so I'm wondering, could you not take your phone to America and get a new sim card? My American Blackberry breathed its last over here and I don't want to buy another new phone.

I figured it out the day after I posted this, just forgot to update. She must have been watching SVTs own shows. I don't get why I can't watch Lyxfällan though, it's TV3 specific show as far as I know. But oh well. I even emailed some with Viaplay, being willing to pay for it but restrictions still apply of course. I'll look into the proxy thing when I feel like I have the energy ;)

We have now re-equiped ourselves with a car so we have a bit more freedom and a lot less money.

@Nola123 - I brought my smartphone over since its new and still very good but it has turned out that extremely few American providers allow you to bring your own phone into the deal. And for the ones that do... the plans are just too expensive. So I've ended up ordering a new phone even-though I didn't want to and I couldn't find one that was really an upgrade to the one I have. Yes I am very annoyed by that.

I got my smartphone in Norway, operator locked. Got to the US, simply removed the SIM card and got added onto my wife's family plan with no problems at all. If it's operator locked, you may or may not have to pay someone $50 - $100 bucks to "unlock it." It's not exactly 100% legal so they don't do it at the customer service desk at Best Buy. However, it's not like it's enforced in any way, shape or form.
