Hey guys, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but let's see.

I did my M.Sc. in Sustainable development in Uppsala University in Sweden and I was wondering if anyone has experience using their Swedish University Credentials to gain employment here in the US, in other words, do they recognize Swedish credentials?

Or do I need some sorta agencies to look through them and evaluate my education?

Any pointers would be most appreciated.

Tack sa mycket!

Good hopefully they will stamp and sign it too. Some do and some don't. That's why I prefer to go to the office because then I can ask for a stamp and signature. Don't think it's really needed but it looks more formal. And if you say you want it for a visa application that's usually what they do.

If you say it's for US visa they automatically stamp and sign.

Normal personbevis you order they don't.

And I just remembered that what they didn't print there for me was another exert that I needed to prove name change. The line at the tax office here in Gothenburg is very long almost always however..whereas when I've called (3 times so far) I've always gotten to talk to someone imidiately and had the papers next day in mail..signed and stamped

Hi!

I would advise you to get your education validated to US equivalent. I have read a lot of job ads and some require it...meaning you "might" not need it but I would get as much evidence of education as possible, specific courses and so on. I have a MSc chem degree from Gothenburg uni and a licentiate in Chem. Eng. from Chalmers...I'm having it all validated.

Good luck :)

Do you have qualified work experience after your degree? That would make it easier for you since you could show any future employers that you've previously been considered "employable".

I've had no major problems getting first contact with companies with my M.Sc from KTH. But I also have +1 year of work experience with a big international company.

You should be posting your resume on monster.com and other job sites related to your intended profession, together with applying for jobs that you find!

I agree with this, however my thinking would be "what if the job that I really want require it" :P

I'll be better safe than sorry.. Also my licentiate is not a standard degree in US... maybe with just the Master which is made to be internationally equivalent it will be more straight forward?

How long did it take you to get your first job? And how do you find job seeking in US to differ from Sweden? I'm very nervous about this... :$

It depends. Is this specific degree a requirement to work in your field? If so, you should get it evaluated in the US. You don't need to have it evaluated if you're looking for jobs with a requirement of having a BA or masters, but not specified to the specific field you have a degree in. E.g the job I have requires a minimum of a BA in a business field, so I just showed my BA diploma from my university. I assume your diploma is in Swedish?! If so, make sure to have it translated or get a English version from your school, if that's an option?!

Where are you having your's validated? Is it expensive?

I'm not yet in the US unfortunately but I have been probing the job market extensively. I got my first job in Sweden in 45 days after I graduated (not sure if this is what you were asking!). I'm confident I'll find a good job pretty much as soon as I'm allowed to start working. Engineers are highly sought after in the US.

I set up accounts on monster.com glassdoor.com dice.com and indeed.com and posted my resume. I used my fiancée's address and also her phone number until she got me a US number and phone.

The job search process is not very different from what it is in Sweden. Unless you have contacts you have to use job boards find openings that seem like a good fit. A few things that stand out: Your master's degree will account for about 3 years of work experience, maybe 4 years. When you post your resume you have to make absolutely sure it's in word format and does not use any tables or funny stuff like that. Just plain text and bullet points at the most. Everyone uses automated resume scanning software and they're very sensitive about the format. You'll also have to make sure all the right key words are in there and all the wrong ones are not!

As I said, I don't have a job in the US yet but I can help you to at least get to the point where I am. Just ask away if there's anything. :)

No your degree is still an academic achievement only in your resume. But when a job posting states "Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience" you can use your master's degree as an equivalent to about 3 years of experience and then the remaining 2 years would have to come from actual work experience.

There are plenty of resources on the internet that should help explain this better than what I can do. Google is your friend! :)

All very useful advice and input, thanks a lot for sharing! I was hoping to get a job in the field I studied, i.e. Sustainable Development but I haven't any job experience yet. The idea is to get one foot in using the degree I obtained. Will get things certified if that is what they want. Good luck to all job seekers!

Ah! yes this i've seen in some ads :)

They will state it as 5+ years or MSc with 2+ or PhD with 1+ or similar

I just hope that the process of looking for work won't be too long... since we will already not be able to work until we get the permit...and I don't like the idea of someone else paying for me...

Hello everyone!

Quick question:

My fiancé is about to turn in her Packet 3. However she's having a hard time paying online so she printed out the necessary info and will pay in the bank.

When she went to the bank, they close at 1. So now here lies the problem, she's going on a trip on August 4 and the paper work she printed out says that it will expire on August 4.

Is there a way for me to pay it here in Guam or what will happen if she will just let it expire and will pay it when she gets back in August 9
