No suggestions? :)

I would use the US citizen's legal name in America, so if the SSN and passport are in the maiden name, use that. You can kind of use both names in America legally, so it is a grey area, but that would be easiest.

I use both of mine depending on the context because I'm too lazy/cheap to change my names on my passports before they expire.

For immigration I would recommend using her married name, that's what will be on her green card. With passports you can always bring a copy of the marriage certificate to show proof of married name.

For other stuff like signing your name when your card gets charged at the store that's a whole different thing. Use whatever name you want. But for immigration you want to use the married name so you get it right on the green card and won't have to go through the process of changing it.

The question was about the petitioner, the US citizen.

Thank you, Sören & Maria. I called the local vårdcentral just now and their "vaccination expert" (hahaha) will call me tomorrow and give me some recommendations and information. I'll ask to have the stelkramp, flu and the hepatitis shots (hopefully I won't have to wait 6 months for the last one), mustn't forget to get the records of it so I can bring it to the medical.

Good luck on your journey too, Maria. You've come far already, I'm a bit jealous, just wish to be with my man as soon as possible. It feels like it's taking a long time now, but once this part is over I bet I'll be thinking that it went pretty fast after all. :P

Søren, how long did your medical take?

Less then 20 min. normal is about 30-45 min.

He was late that morning.

He ask 20-30 questions.

Then look at medical paperwork.

Then you have to undress and they look at reflex etc.

Then they take Height and weight.

Last the eye test. (i passed with 20/20 even with me using classes while driving.)

Last the shots if needed.

But realistically it probably doesn't matter which name.

Maria scared the sh*t out of me with her post about hepatitis, so I don't dare not to get it now. :D

Sorry! I did not intend for that to happen! Hep A and B is on the decline here in the US but it's a vaccine that is always good to have when travelling. And considering how bad food hygiene is at some places here (like the E. coli outbreak at Chipotle) and how the government hide what bad stuff is in our water, I feel it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sorry for scaring you :P

Hey,

We are currently filling out forms for our I-130 application to get a IR-1 visa approved and are confused about family name /surname for the petitioner as it is different in U.S. and Swedish documentation.

Don't want to make any unnecessary mistakes.

Scenario is the following;

- Wife is Petitioner

- Wife has dual citizenship, U.S. and Swedish. (Born in Sweden, U.S. Citizenship via her father)

- Most of her life spent in the U.S.

- Husband is Swedish

- We got married in Sweden.

- Wife changed her SWEDISH surname to husbands. Kept her maiden name as a middle name.

- U.S. passport still state the maiden surname. Have not changed anything since marriage.

What family name do we put in the forms for the wife?

All our documentation from Swedish authorities are with her "new" name.

Any ideas?

I assume you'll be sending her US passport as proof of her US citizenship?! So to prevent confusion with the I-130 being in one name (her married name) and her proof of US status being in another name (maiden name), I'd just go with the maiden name.

And since she has her maiden name as her middle name, it shouldn't cause any issues with your personbevis later on at NVC and the embassy either. :)
