Those of you who have already made the move; what did you do about your bank accounts in your home country?

(And those who have yet to move; what do you plan to do?)

With the move and inability to work for the first months in mind I've been trying to save up enough money that I can feel like I'm also contributing to our household. I'm asking cause I'm not sure what to do about it - paying a fee for every withdrawal seems unnecessary

You're gonna want to keep your bank account till at least your tax return in your home country is done, in case you get money back (or need to pay back, but let's hope that's not gonna happen. ). I'm keeping a bank account in Denmark and a bank account in Sweden for that very reason.

If you have any stock or funds, e.g. ISK, depå, kapitalförsäkring etc, then most banks won't allow you to keep them when you move to the US because they can't be bothered with all the reporting they'll have to do to IRS if they let you keep them.

So yeah, basically I'm selling off our stock portfolios and transferring all our money to the US when I move over. I'll leave just a few thousand in one Swedish bank account for unforeseen expenses, because you just never know.

We keep ours open for ease of money transfers and for using to buy gifts in Denmark from some places that give you difficulty with foreign credit cards. It will also be handy for when we travel there because only one of our credit cards doesn't charge foreign transaction fees and there are a few places that only want to take Dankort from my recollection. I don't know if that will be different now that American cards have chips in them too.

So I emailed the US embassy in Stockholm a week ago when I realized that I forgotten to put our case number on those last documents that the embassy had requested. A week later and I still haven't received a response to my email. Gave up and just re-sent all our documents again tonight, as we didn't wanna loose any more time. For once, I'm glad we had that NVC nightmare so we know to get all documents in two sets with original signatures, otherwise we would have lost even more time. Just want this visa nightmare over and done with,

Seems like something is going on with that embassy, they were always fast and answered. Now you don't get respons and another don't get their package 3 after 14 days seems weird!

I understand you resent in after loosing patient with them, I would have done the same. Like always I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Yeah, I know that Soeren has been waiting pretty long for his interview date. And there's another I know who's also been waiting for an answer to their 221(g). Very frustrating. If they are short staffed or for whatever reason have a longer response time, why not put an automatic response to say this when people email them?! Then at least you know and won't pester them, you know?!

Hey,

We are currently filling out forms for our I-130 application to get a IR-1 visa approved and are confused about family name /surname for the petitioner as it is different in U.S. and Swedish documentation.

Don't want to make any unnecessary mistakes.

Scenario is the following;

- Wife is Petitioner

- Wife has dual citizenship, U.S. and Swedish. (Born in Sweden, U.S. Citizenship via her father)

- Most of her life spent in the U.S.

- Husband is Swedish

- We got married in Sweden.

- Wife changed her SWEDISH surname to husbands. Kept her maiden name as a middle name.

- U.S. passport still state the maiden surname. Have not changed anything since marriage.

What family name do we put in the forms for the wife?

All our documentation from Swedish authorities are with her "new" name.

Any ideas?

But the fun part is, even with that date, i´m not that happy
