I was super nervous too... but there was really no reason to be! :) Everyone at the embassy was really friendly, even if the very first security guard that talked to me was more on the serious side. Just double (and triple) check you have all the papers you need, and the passport photos... and you should be good to go! Good luck!

Thank you ?

I have everything on the list they sent me, I'm just worried that they want some additional papers or something, that they didn't ask for.. That would be typical for this journey..

This is great to know, thank you. :) I have about 15 years of work experience so I've really been struggling how to get my CV down to only one page and get my skill set across at the same time. What about a photo, do you normally add that to the CV in the US?

Hi Malla, You're most welcome and to answer your other question, no we don't generally add any photo to the cv/resume.

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I've sent mail from Norway to the US a few times, so can comment on my experiences. Postcards have typically taken about two weeks and packages about a week. It could be slower in summer though....

Thank you AnL, I'm so frustrated with the postal services right now. It's been 4weeks and still the paperwork has not been delivered to me yet. Guess he'll have to send them yet again. Soooooo annoying.

Thank you for the information!!

The letter you got was probably related to the FATWA tax report duty thing.

I just transferred my money from Swedbank to my husband's Citizen's bank account. They charged 50 sek on my end and...$18 on his end I think. Better than the percentage charged by Paypal if you're transferring larger amounts at least! If I remember correctly it took like a week for the money to transfer.

You can wire money between different US banks and accounts and even US to foreign, but there is a fee. I've done it plenty of times and you've been able to do it since I can remember. We've wired money back and forth from the American to Danish account and to my daughter's old school in Denmark without any issues.

How do you think people buy houses and things, with checks? Last year we just wired the full price of our house to the lawyer's trust account and then they wired it to the sellers.

As to the foreign account, we left it open and they sent a weird letter saying they were required to report our account to the US authorities or some such nonsense. We'll use it when we travel back.

Thank you for the information!! My main concern was to wire from Sweden to the U.S, but it looks like there shouldn't be any problems. I've bought a house in the U.S before, and it certainly went through checks! But of course, I'm sure you can do it electronically too.

The letter you got was probably related to the FATWA tax report duty thing.

Okay I wanted to ask this on the facebook group but I don't trust the facebook privacy settings even in a closed group... I got married on August 1 (secret to everyone who's attending our ceremony on September 5 that's why I don't want to post this on facebook). I tried emailing a couple of questions to Skatteverket but it's now been 3 days and I haven't heard anything.

How do I let them know I'm married? Feels like I should tell them but there's no form for it. Also, how do I let them know I've changed my last name? Only form I've seen is one you should fill in BEFORE you get married and it seems to be only for two Swedish citizens because it asks for "personnummer" and not just date of birth like on some of their other forms.

Thank you in advance!

You need to send in a copy of your marriage certificate and you use the form for name change that you are talking about. You only put down the date of birth on the us citizen but that is fine they don't expect foreigners to have a personnummer.

Is that something we HAVE to do?

Not unless you want them to get really really angry if they found out you didn't :P Like that time I did not know I was supposed to tell them I moved to the US as an Au Pair and I got my head chewed off by someone at their office when they did find out...

I think it's better to just do it and have it done otherwise in their records I was unmarried all my life and that sounds pretty sad :P

It doesn't have to be a certified copy right? I don't feel like wasting one on them...

Okay I finally got a reply from Skatteverket (took exactly 1 week to get) so I figured I would post the official instructions for registering a marriage in Sweden (if you come on a K1 and marry in the US) here though they're pretty much like Alaska said.

They want you to write a letter stating that you want to register your marriage with your contact information. They also want copies of your marriage certificate and both your passports (both US and non-US citizen passport). The certificate and passport needs to be signed by two people confirming that the copies match the originals (signature, print name and contact info)

If you want to take his/her last name you fill out form 7630

It should be sent to this address:

Skatteverket

Box 942

601 19 Norrköping
SVERIGE
