It says a police certificate from everyplace you lived for more than 6 months...does that mean TOWNS or PROVINCES?? The one I just got I had to physically be present and sign for...Do I have to travel back to all the towns I lived and do that?? That CANNOT be right........(please say it is not right)

This is who we went through... http://www.fingerprinting.ca/services.html . I think the total cost was $85 CDN. He got his report back in about 3 weeks (or sooner) if I'm not mistaken.

Immigration to other countries:

USA:

IFS Canada is the designated fingerprinting service in Canada for persons applying for Immigrant Visas to the USA. Fingerprints taken at any other location, including police agencies, will not be accepted thereby delaying the application. All applicants will be issued a kit outlining the process involved in immigrating to the USA.

As well as the FBI clearance, visa applicants living in Canada also require a police clearance certificate issued by the RCMP. Fingerprints for this process can be obtained at any of the noted IFS Canada offices at the same time of fingerprinting for the FBI clearance.

I believe you can do do either electronic or mail... we did the electronic version, for it was faster. That is... faster if you don't have any convictions, etc. against you.

but it was in RED CRAYON!!!!

Okay that is acceptable! :D

I did mine in PINK! :P

I had to talk my guy out of using the crayons... instead he opted for colored pencils. The fingerprint place could lift his fingerprints off the colored pencils better than the crayons. The crayons were just too waxy.

wow $85 is the most $$$$ I have seen on here for a police background search. No criminal record = no fingerprinting. Criminal record = fingerprinting required!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

That included the fingerprinting........ hence the need to lift his prints from the colored pencils! LOL

Okay, all joking aside, it was $10 for the office fee and $75 for the process. Again, we did the electronic processing which gives a turn-around of 72 hours vs. months of waiting.

flames9 is correct. You can just do the name check verson of the police certificate if you have no criminal record and you are going through a US embassy in Canada. The fingerprints version of the Canadian police check is only required if you have a criminal record or you are immigrating though a US embassy outside of Canada.

Dumba$$ lawyers. ARGH!!! That's what they said he had to have. Guess they (lawyers), as I'm finding out, like to go overboard on details and information - which I'm glad for, but geez... He's lived in different cities around Ontario (since he was 16), so perhaps that's another reason why they said to do it that way??? I dunno... oh, well. We know he's covered, for sure! :jest:

Don't feel bad about the extra money. I actually flew to Canada to do the electronic fingerprinting service and the bloody machine couldn't scan my fingerprints properly. Luckily the guy didn't make me pay for the paper prints. That would have made me really angry.

I don't consider the cost of the plane ticket a total waste though. I really enjoyed visiting my friends and going to all the old familiar places.

Humm.. now i'm slightly concerned. The check I had done from my local office says, "A Canada wide name check has been done with the following information..." But it makes no mention of a CPIC. I sure hope that's ok... I did pay $40 for the darn thing!

Police Records

Inside Canada: Applicants who are physically present in Canada should contact their local police service or Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) office regarding criminal record check procedures. Applicants may obtain a certificate of no conviction issued by any Canadian police service so long as it notes that Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or the national criminal records repository was searched using the applicant’s name and date of birth. Applicants should ensure that the search includes all names that they have previously used, including maiden names, prior married names, or names used before Canadian naturalization. (Note: Because records checks based on name and date of birth only are sometimes less thorough than those based on fingerprints, U.S. diplomatic offices reserve the right to request that certain applicants obtain fingerprint-based searches from the RCMP.)
