It's possible that it may differ by state, but we were married last month in Indiana and my husband didn't need a SSN. You should be able to contact the clerk's office or check their website and find out.

Uh oh... was thinking - does my fiancee have to have a Social Security Number in the US before we can get married???

I believe it does vary from state to state. We were married in North Carolina and it is required. However, since I am Canadian and do not have a SSN the clerk's office had a standard affidavit that I signed and they notarized indicating that I was a non-resident and as such did not have a SSN. Problem solved! You should be able to find out from the office where you obtain your marriage license. Good luck.

The lady who helped us when we got out marriage license put my Canadian SIN in the SSN line. What a dummy.

Classic. It's so funny dating and now being engaged to a Canadian. I'm SO amazed at how self-centered and unaware some Americans are that things are different. So much is assumed at times! Sheesh! :bonk:

(LOL... I've been DYING to try to find a post where I could use the "bonk"!)

Like the others said, its state specific. I've researched the requirements in Colorado and its "preferred" that you have a SSN but not "required." I think i'm going to apply before the wedding anyways, just so I can be put on the fiance's bank accounts and everything... aka, so I can spend his money on wedding details while he's at work :blush:

Yes. it is required in NJ. In addition, I believe there is a waiting period.

Some states say they require it, but like others have mentioned, there will be people that do not live in the US that want to get married, so they should have a way around having the SSN -like North Carolina and the waiver. I had asked the women at the register of deeds about it, as the waiver really didn't fit my situation (the waiver said I was not a citizen of the US, but rather somewhere else, and that I was not eligible for an SSN - which I was). She said they just needed it for the license, and that it would in no way affect actually getting my SSN.

I'm glad too...I applied for my SSN a little under 4 weeks into my arrival (after I had done the wedding license :) ) and the woman at the SSN office said that USCIS hadn't put my information in the system yet, so I would not be getting my card for another 4-6 weeks! That would have screwed over my wedding plans eh? :)
