29-year veteran state senator and finance committee chairman Hugh Leatherman:

"I'm as conservative a person as ever walked the planet, but I also consider myself a compassionate person who tries to make sure our people are taken care of. Our people are hurting, and I'm going to fight as hard as I can to get as much of that federal money into this state as I can."

....

Sounds to me like the GOP doesn't know it's head from its toes...

He's been listening to Rush too long. For him, it's more important to see Obama fail than to see anyone succeed.

That about sums it up.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

The money doesn't come without strings; it also creates mandatory programs and dependencies that would exist long after the funding for them is gone. Someone has to show concern for the country's long term fiscal health since most DC pols certainly aren't.

Why don't you go to Washington and straighten them out? You know how to solve all the worlds problems, give it a shot.

To be fair - it is a valid point...when the banks got their bailout it came with conditions - I understand some banks declined the offer too. Your response above doesn't actually address the comment made by Barza - telling someone to go to Washington to sort out the problems could equally be applied to yourself - why dont you go to Washington?

Because I don't claim to be a know it all and criticize everyone for what they do.

since she knew about these strings attached and you didn't, maybe she does know it all. ;)

So you've got the GOP Governor saying 'no' and a 29-year veteran Conservative Senator saying 'yes.' If that's party unity then can I have some fries with that?

There are strings attached to the money. There always is.

Plus, what could go wrong with printing endless supplies of money? We have plenty of cotton and trees.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Make up your mind. You proclaimed the diversity in the Democratic Party but hate it in the GOP. I'm mystified why the GOP still gets more air time after Obama's victory. When Gore and Kerry lost, they disappeared there was little coverage of the Democrats until the next election. It's not like the Democrats need GOP votes in Congress unless the Dems start to vote against the party line.

Are you serious? Do you know that the state Senate in CA removed their Majority Leader after he sided with Gov. Schwarzenegger and the Dems in drafting a budget? The GOP has been notorious as of '94 for being fiercely united...it was part of their success, but the unity didn't last forever which is why the party is severely divided. Even the GOP Chairman Steele can't decide whether he's for abortion or not. The GOP is in a serious tailspin and it's unlikely they'll be pulling themselves out of it anytime soon. About the only thing they can hope for is for the Dems to screw up royally....like worse than the Repubs did for the last 8 years...which is a tough act to follow.

Apples to oranges here, alc. You have 29-year Senator saying the complete opposite to what the GOP Governor is saying. It's one thing to have a difference of opinion - it's another when such differences can't be overcome within the GOP to find a compromise. These are sad times for the Repubs. Don't expect it to get better anytime soon.

The GOP is so lost, it's ridiculous. How many of them were all for the giant bank bailout? I remember how McCain was grandstanding that. So it's alright to carelessly pour funds into insolvent businesses, but when it comes to carelessly pouring funds into anything else-- all of a sudden, they transform back to fiscal conservatives?

And people wonder why the Republican party is falling apart at the seams. They don't care about the country, just their own warped agenda.

I am as liberal as they come but I have to disagree with this statement. Well maybe not the statement but the scope of it. "They" don't all behave this way. There are some Republicans that truly care about our country. I don't necessarily agree with their positions on certain issues but you can tell that they are genuine. With that said, most of them are douche bags.

She's your pal, not mine. I'm dumb, I don't know any better.

Granted, I made a wide sweeping statement and I know that is not the case for all of them. But it seems that many do not want to work together to see this thing thru.
