it is funny ... I was just talking to my fiance about this thread and his answer was

New York....POLITE?!?!?!?!?!?! :P

ok haters...now you all need to get over yourselves and stop picking on us.

erh.. excuse me.. I didn't mean to upset anybody here...I am not a hater... I dislike the word to begin with

I've never been to NYC so I can't say a thing about the city.. as for my fiance.. he has been there so I guess he knows what he is talking about...

What about Rio? :D

yeah I was thinking the same about Curitiba :P , but I doubt they included it in their research.

I just spent last year in Sao Paulo and I saw some of the rudest stuff in my life there! For example, a man pushed a woman with a broken arm into a wall to get past her on Avenida Paulista. She started crying and he didn't even stop! And if you're FOREIGN, well, you are screwed in Sao Paulo. Nobody will be nice to you without you making the effort to prove you're a nice person. That said, I met a lot of really really nice people (for example, my fiance!). But rio and curitiba are like, FULL of the world's friendliest people. Didn't go up North but I hear they are even nicer.

Did insane monkeys with typewriters write that article? That's the only way I can guess new york could be described as "polite"

No ######. Politeness of course requires people to honk the nanosecond the light turns green.

The same people who physically manhandle you in the train station without so much as even a token apology.

I agree with what another poster said... in asia and specifically India, saying "please" and "thank you" is not common, it's just a cultural thing.. whoever started this article never thought to include cultural norms. what's polite for us may not be polite in other countries.

Good point. Though noone says 'Thank You' to me when I hold the door open for them in NYC. Rather they look somewhat surprised ;)

Still I must admit - people in NYC are infinitely more polite than equivalent people in the part of NJ we have just moved to. Those people are simply arseholes.

I like NYC too - and to be fair, the people here are rather more polite than in say, London.

Its just unfortunate that my wife and I have to suffer east New Jerseyites. Can't wait till our lease is up, and we can move to a nicer neighbourhood.
