New York and Sao Paulo (Brazil) most polite cities according to Readers Digest; Bombay (India) is the rudest

Did insane monkeys with typewriters write that article? That's the only way I can guess new york could be described as "polite"

And they were smoking crack.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

"... The survey used three tests to take stock of the politeness factor -- dropping papers in a busy street to see if anyone would help, checking how often shop assistants said "thank you", and counting how often someone held a door open.... "

That's a very narrow factor to define politeness, no wonder Asian cities score low. I don't think it's very common in my place to hold a door open for someone else, we are not very "friendly" towards strangers back home. It's different in western world where you always say "Hi" to everyone (even strangers) you come across when you walk outside, we don't do that in Asia (well, at least in my home country). Our friendliness is expressed in different way.

Well if those are the main criteria then New York WILL score high. For Pete's sake I can't get thru a lunch time walk without some Japanese or German tourist launching their pop up map in my face (I work near Grand Central, Saks, St. Patrick's Cathedral and not too far from Rockefeller Center). In the morning its worse, because I am rushing to work and I get stopped a lot. I have even travelled backwards to help a couple who ended up on a bus to Brooklyn when all they were trying to do was get from Wall Street to midtown.

And I am not the only New Yorker who does that on a DAILY basis. When my office was inside a major landmark building it was worse, the tourists would clog the lobby taking pics asking employees on their way into the office to take pictures, yadda yadda yadda.

As for door holding, that's a given. I have not had anyone let a door go in my face and people do say thank you. I have had people give me a swipe on their Metrocard (bus train fare) when mine ran out or would not work and I have done the same for others and not asked for money. I have had someone walk me under his umbrella to my office because I was getting wet (and I am no Ms. McHottie, so he was being kind). New Yorkers are kind to each other ALL the time. I think September 11 has definitely impacted the city for the better. People are a lot more patient. But no matter what, people will continue to live on the old New York stereotypes.

But I invite you to come visit....PM me first. ;)

Oh please - I have lived in NYC -- I do know what I'm talking about. "polite" is not a word I would use to describe new yorkers. It's not the only city where people get bothered to ask directions by tourists.

A true story: I was in a grocery store and they had just mopped the floors. A woman has a basket of groceries and slips and falls and drops everything everywhere as she goes to stand in line for the register -- a woman appraoches the woman from behind and what does she ask?

"excuse me, but -- are you in line?"
