Trouble is, if it's a good place of employment, those in the know would be aware of the lying and cheating and kick you out to touch. Seems like a pointless thing to do to me.

Honestly? Boredom, mostly.

However, I do think that to continue to lie effectively, over a long period, you have to believe your lies, most people don't, and to top it off, most people need to broadcast their deceptions in order to boast about them so someone good in HR would get to know.

That's a great idea and for the most part, I completely agree. However, starting your own business can be extremely difficult. You need funding, something to sell or provide and the overall customer base. Add that to the fact most businesses fail to make money during the first few years in operation and many more fail, especially if it's a small business.

I think the problem with small businesses is that the owner attempts to wear too many hats. You can't work as every position anywhere, regardless of where you work or for whom. Owners need to hire help. Of course, that starts down a catch 22. You need help to earn money, but you need money to hire help.
