Another Quitter here :dance: Kinda interesting story cuz I have to give my beloved son all the credit. He was a young lad in grade school and came home scared to death one day and sobbing that he did not want me to die !! He had learned about the dangers of smoking in school. He promptly began hiding, flushing and otherwise disposing of my cigarettes until I quit  I think I was really ready by that point, having tried unsuccessfully many times before. The love and concern my son showed me was a great motivator and made me realize I wanted to be around for him (L)

I quit cold turkey on his birthday 12 years ago and each year we celebrate his life and mine (F)

Awwww...that is such a SWEET story! You are blessed to have such a son. :star:

He did at first and quit for me. Later I discovered he was still smoking sheesha. I know the addiction is very difficult to quit for smokers. I confronted him and he said it didn't count as smoking. lolz! I said so if I drink alcohol from a bowl instead of a bottle it won't count? On our honeymoon I also busted him smoking in the guest room of our flat one morning when he thought I was asleep. To this date he says he quit but I don't know if he really has. It remains to be seen while I am there. Now he says he quit and only smoke sheesha once a week while on his break from the military. I was a social smoker say when I went to clubs with smoker friends. I don't really smoke now and haven't for awhile and don't really plan to in the future. I told him if he was going to continue smoking he'd have to do it outside and I don't really like it. I tried smoking sheesha while I was in Cairo. We did it in public. He told me it was looked down upon for women to do it in public especially cigs but that it was ok for me to try it with him. He never wants to see me smoking cigs though. I took a puff of the hookah and nearly passed out it was so heavy on my lungs I couldn't breath. I don't think I would ever try it again even if he had one at home and smoked it on the balcony.

am not sure if its really a mena-thing....but i'd have to considerably conclude that i see too many smokers here (2 yrs plus in uae). In my work place alone, every arab i know don't eat during daytime but they smoke chimney-lots! and that never ceases to amaze me how they manage to live w/out eating (at least not that i visibly see) other than smoke and coffee (some turkish coffee-very strong) till our time-off work.

Seriously, how do these guys not develop gastrities/ulcer related problems when i never see them eat during at which time we (means me and those i have lunch with)perceived as "time to eat or else"?

you say that, but I dont see it.

its the norm in israel at least in the negev for especially the women to barely eat all day and smoke tons and drink coffee. many do the same during pregnancy as well. their kids come out ok, seem to do well in school, they dont seem to have a high level of cancer etc and even their skin looks good. its like there is no recourse so whats the big deal. and i see it at every generation, so its not like they are doing it in their 20s and 30s and paying for it later. my MIL for example never eats, except salad and a little meat or fish at dinner, she smokes all day long and has about 5-6 coffees over the course of the day. she seems so healthy, active, her skin isnt bad.

WOW ! Maybe something in the genes! I know for smoking 17 years (started when I was 13 living in NY..we were so damn cool  ) and the other ways I have abused my body over the years, I should be showing way more damage to my skin and face. I am actually amazed...must be something in the pizza sauce and all the great Italian food I ate growing up  It's always fun to see people's reactions when I tell them I have a son almost 21

Just look at the mortality rates in those countries and you will have your answer.

The smoking will damage their health, but the coffee drinking and not eating will not. Various studies have come out on coffee consumption and I haven't seen any yet to say it's definitely bad. As a matter of fact, I've seen some that say it can even be good for you. Also, studies have shown that calorie restriction can extend life. It's America's overeating that causes most of it's health problems (obesity and diabetes and all that come with it).

hmmm...... my boss whom i worked with for 2 yrs plus now was and has been smoking (plentttttttttttttyyyyyyy) and drinking coffee all day at work and not once did i see him eat during lunch...........till 1 year after (since i started) he had heart attack so the rest of these year- he has been on medication and i know he has been prevented and warned from ever smoking again but stubborn he is, he sneaks and still smoke at work w/out his family knowing (i know he keeps his cigarette at work) but have considerably lessen what he consumes- i can tell. And good gracious! i see him with food sometimes. In a nutshell, yes it backfires to some but he is just one- thats 1 out of 10...the 9 are still smoking hell and coffee addicts but ...ohh well...maybe their time will come ... .........hmm....quitquitquitquit

From what I saw, in Rabat and Casablanca were women smoking Sheeshas in some small cafes.

Hubby doesnt mind me smoking Sheesha if it is he and me.

Hubby doesnt mind me smoking outside, as long as his mother and some select "older" siblings dont see.

I never really saw any women smoking cigarettes.

I just noticed that he didnt want others to "see" me in a certain light.

So smoking cigarettes and drinking and sheesha was limited to very intimate company and mostly NOT AT ALL.

He doesnt want anyone to talk about "his" wife and what she does.

It just isnt as acceptable there. I cannot have my same comfortable, relaxed and free state as I do here.

Here it doesnt matter, no one to see, no one to judge.

His mother KNOWS he smokes cigs yet he won't let her "see" him smoking. :bonk:

DH doesn't smoke cigarettes but has argeelah a once or twice a week. I quit before I had my daughter from a previous marriage 9 years ago. So I only smoked from 17 til 20. I quit because I wanted to get pregnant and I made it a public display of quitting which helped me stick to it finally. Thanks to God. Neither of us drink, and if he gets corrupted here I will manage some sort of mental torture... ;)

BTW, my ex husband made a show of quitting when I did, however I came to find that he had been sneaking and lying to me for a whole year until I caught him (the sneaking mattered more than the smoking to me). I guess I was clueless back then but the direct from work to shower worked well for him. Still not sure what else he might have lied about...... La la la la la laaaa. He was an alcoholic too, that's why I don't drink anymore either.

One of the big reasons my daughter (and mother) now loves my current husband is because he doesn't smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol so he'll dissapoint three cuties if he does anything stupid.
