I have a question to those of you who smoked arguila/sheesha or cigarettes in your S/O's country...did you do it in public? And did your S/O approve of this?

Just wondering since females smoking (cigarettes or sheesha) in public is generally frowned upon in Egypt. I've seen women doing it but the women are generally viewed as "sharameet" for doing so in public. And by sharameet I don't mean whores (metnaka), I mean "loose" or rather not of high esteem.

There are a couple women in my husband's family (not immediate family) that do smoke in the home but wouldn't be caught dead doing so in public.

When staying in Alex I saw quite a few ladies smoking sheesha. Also, when we were in Zagazig we went to this posh little place every night and there were young girls in there smoking sheesha. I can't say I remember seeing one smoking a cig though. I just tried it but didn't sit and puff on it. My husband was actually pushing it on me to try it to see if I liked it. I'm sure he wouldn't like me to pick the habit up here or there but he wanted me to at least try it one time.

I myself don't smoke anything, but while I was in Egypt I did see many women smoke sheesha especially by the sea. Wael had ask me once if I would like to try it so I guess it's not that bad if a woman wants to smoke it in public. However only a couple times did I see a woman smoke a cigarette.

We would go to Green Plaza in Alexandria and many times I saw women co-mingled with men at the open coffee shops smoking sheesha. Do you think it could possibly be the area where women are?

Yanno after I posted I thought, perhaps this is only the mentality of the ppl in rural areas and not so much the bigger cities. Although the ladies in my husband's family who do smoke are in Cairo and still don't smoke in public. But of course they're probably more old school than a lot of Cairenes.

Oh and the only women I saw smoking in public were in big cities-Alex and Cairo-at "family" cafes.

My husband wouldn't want me to smoke cigarettes at all, in public or otherwise. He has mixed feelings about the sheesha. Sometimes he says it's unhealthy and he wouldn't want me to do it at all. Other times, he's said it would be okay if we were on our balcony or somewhere where no one knew us, but not in Morocco and not at one of his hangouts here. I might try a tobaccoless kind one day (if there really is such a thing), but I doubt I'd like it except maybe second-hand.

Neither of us smoke.

I hope all the smokers here will quit soon voluntarily. However difficult that might be, it's better than the other, inevitable way to quit.

One of the things we have in common. Neither of us smoke and we both hate it can't stand the smell. We are such anti-smokers we don't have friends who smoke. That would have been a deal breaker for me and him.

When we were with some friends of my husband at Khan el Khali, there were a few younger women smoking sheesha. Well lemme tell you the entire conversation after that was "how do their parents allow such a thing", "don't they see what they are doing???", etc. etc. I asked what about the men sitting there and I just got this *look* like, what ABOUT the men, what's the big deal if a man smokes sheesha in public, this is a WOMAN!

So as far as my husband and his friends go, women are looked down upon if they are smoking in public.

I smoke, the only one in the whole family, and they HATE ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. My husband is very sweet and babies me, my mother and daughter are not so sweet, they complain 24/7, just pisses me off. I did quit smoking for almost ten years than I went through my divorce and that went down the tubes, not happy with myself about that one, but I will quit again. As far as smoking in public, I do what I want, as long as I am with my husband I am good, now if the other family is around, forget it, they will rag me until I put it out. Believe me my mother has nothing on the Taliban, I would rather live with them than her. lol Between her and my oldest daughter I have very little freedom, it sucks, I can not wait until my husband is finally home, he is a big buffer between me and the family. One time my daughter went through my damn room, and snooped on me, and believe me she would bail on me, she is not to be trusted. lol

We need a new thread by the smokers who were successful in quitting so they can advise those that are trying to quit.

I can tell you one of the secrets to quitting, its worked for me for 20 years. You have got to really want to quit. I was hypnotized, and before i went, everytime i'd light up i'd ask myself what am i doing and why? it worked!!! But you have really got to want to quit!

Another Quitter here :dance: Kinda interesting story cuz I have to give my beloved son all the credit. He was a young lad in grade school and came home scared to death one day and sobbing that he did not want me to die !! He had learned about the dangers of smoking in school. He promptly began hiding, flushing and otherwise disposing of my cigarettes until I quit  I think I was really ready by that point, having tried unsuccessfully many times before. The love and concern my son showed me was a great motivator and made me realize I wanted to be around for him (L)

I quit cold turkey on his birthday 12 years ago and each year we celebrate his life and mine (F)
