Really???????? Isn't that in principle against the law? As in, you cannot discriminate job applicants based on sexual orientation? Talk about fvckedup-ness.

You can't legally discriminate on sexual orientation but how many employers will be able to make a fair determination after finding out someone had to leave the army because they were gay?

I thought it was a General Discharge, or administrative...either way...I agree it IS openly discriminating against a set of people that in CIVILIAN life would not/should not face that type of discrimination....But, it's not a civilian 'job'. There are certain 'rights' you give up when you volunteer for the Military, and no matter how messed up you, me or anyone thinks it is, the way the law is now is how it IS and only a change in that will change the manner which these folks are discharged ( or not).

eta-I don't know many employers who actually 'know' discharge codes- where on the DD214 is the discharge code, anyway? Or is there only a code on a dishonarable?

Sorry, forgot the rest of the world does not work in HR. Code DD214 usually means that got a discharge and not a separation because the form is longer(i.e. we need to pull the WHOLE record). We usually use another form if the person just got a separation ( I thinks its SF-1something). DD214 does give the reason for separation or discharge.

a dd-214 is a department of defense form 214. do keep in mind you are in a conversation with two former military members here.

code dd214 is some hr speak for god know what. to us, it's a history of assignments, promotions, and so on.

NO-a DD-214 is the form number of a member's military discharge papers. I have one and I am not gay.

My DD214 says I had an honorable discharge and I was retired ( I was retired early).

So as a HR ' person...Where would the code be? I am not even seeing a code box.

My DD214 says I had an honorable discharge and I was retired ( I was retired early).

Mine doesn't even list any type of discharge on DD Form 214 Nov. 88. There is a remarks section at the bottom. It just says I'm eligible for Federal benefits, completed term of service, reenlisted, deployed and subject to active duty recall (at the time).

this is what happens when they violate policy.

Policy schmolicy...don't tell me that all violations of policies are punished. It's a bad policy.

First off, I believe that if we could check we would find out that not one of these soldiers were "openly" gay. What typically happens is that someone else asks, someone else tells. Why? Someone else didn't get a promotion, didn't get an award or just had a shitty day and nothing makes you feel better than shitting on somebody else.

Surprisingly, I didn't see any higher level skills noted here. The current policy has the DOD bleeding higly skilled soldiers (interpreters for example).

It was a makeshift policy before, now it is at best outdated and at worst predatory.
