What do you mean they lost the I-129? The copy of the petition, or the NOA2, approval letter of the petition? It is that(the NOA2) which they need when they do AOS. If they do not have a copy of that, I think a copy can be requested by calling USCIS. They'll mail you another copy of the NOA2 (for a fee of course).
