Entering Mexico and Re-entering US

Howdy folks, I had an odd question and thought maybe some people on these boards might know the answer. My wife just passed her interview yesterday and will be picking up her Visa monday. We plan on flying back to los angeles toward the end of the month and we want to take a long overdue honeymoon to cancun. Now I've spoken with immigration and they said all she needs to re-enter the country is her visa and a valid passport. Would that said visa be the one she will be picking up monday or are they going to take that away from her at the point of entry? Next question deals with entering mexico, for that I called the consulate of mexico and they said she only needs a valid passport and a greencard for the US. I know she gets mailed a greencard a few weeks after she enters the US but a friend of mine who went through the exact thing that I'm going said somewhere along the line they stamped her passport with something which claims her passport can be used as a temporary greencard for 1 year. Can anyone verify this or has anyone gone through this situation before?

thanks in advance.

A person entering the USA on an IR-1 or CR-1 visa will get an I-551 stamp in their passport. It is the I-551 stamp that allows re-entry from additional trips out of the USA.

Note: I-551 = GREEN-CARD, and I-551 allows trips to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean without a visa.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.
