How good/bad is the job situation in the U.S.

Another place to look, as he's a US citizen, is usajobs.gov. I'm amazed at all the IT jobs available at all sorts of random US government offices, in every town. He can just stick in his field, or just stick in the towns he wants, and pull up lots of jobs. You can apply online, so he could apply before he comes back. I returned to the states from Morocco in December, and just got hired with the government. Great benefits and stability. Some of the jobs require eligibility (like former military service) but plenty don't.

I think even though there is higher unemployment, there are also always companies looking for good people.
