Hey everyone,

I looked for this topic but couldn't find it anywhere. My wife came in on a K-1 on 12 January from the UK. Got the I-94, everything went fine. We got married 2 days later, and then went to apply for SSN under her new name with all the required documents a couple of weeks later. We waited (about 3 weeks at the advice of the timeline) to make sure she'd be in the system.

Well...she wasn't.

They said that once she showed up, everything would go through just fine and she'd get a card. She still hasn't gotten one, and SSA just keeps saying that there's no record and that it's USCIS's problem. We went to get her a driver's license today and they said the same thing. That there was no record and without her being in the system, there was nothing they could do.

We've already applied for her AOS and have the receipt in hand. However, both the website and the phone say that her receipt can't be found.

Any thoughts would be very appreciated!

PS - I definitely did the phone thing right, with the letters as numbers thing.

I would suggest making an infopass appointment to find out what's going on

You think I've waited long enough to worry? We have a biometrics appointment on the 26th. I'm mostly just worried that she's gotten lost in the system somewhere and they're going to deport her. Is it normal for the website to not have a record of the receipt that they themselves sent us?

I'm going to call the SS office again tomorrow to see if there's been any change.

It takes some time to be able to view the case status through USCIS website (Yes, even after you have your receipt numbers in hand). Most people are able to view their cases online after biometrics

Ok, thank you. That does make me feel at least somewhat better. I assume maybe there is a problem with SS because of the fact that we're doing this under her married name. Although they searched under both her maiden and married names and couldn't find a record of either one. Perhaps Infopass is the way to go.

From what we were told at SS office, they will find the name exactly as written on the I-94. When you go through POE they enter your I-94 into the database and that's what SS can access. It's not a record of filing for AOS or anything like that.

Ok, they've been primarily searching under her married name, since that's what's going to be on the card. Perhaps I need to ask them to specifically search under her maiden name to match the I-94. They said that they were looking under both, but maybe they need a kickstart.

Thank you! Although the drivers license office definitely searched under the maiden name and didn't find anything either.

Let's just say that most SSA clerks don't often deal with people from overseas. Also, let's remember that the USCIS website is a nice idea, but not always reliable as a way to check up on status. Finally, it is not necessary to have the SSN to obtain a driver's license. Different states have differing requirements as to proving the immigrant is legally in the U.S., usually something like the EAD, which must be produced and shown by the applicant.

I'm kinda puzzled as to what the driver's license office was searching. That is a state government thing and wouldn't have access to US government immigration databases I wouldn't think. Your profile indicates you are in Colorado. This is a list of the id requirements.

Looking at that, maybe it's this one "Social Security card verified by SSOLV" and they are trying to verify that she has been issued a social security card, which they haven't.

Back to the database and the I-94 name. It must be pretty exact what they have to search for. My husband filled in the form as (example) John Robert Jones. She couldn't find that name. Nor John R. Jones. Only John Jones finally pulled up his arrival record. That's when she told us it had to be exactly as written on the I-94 to find it. The I-94 only has two spaces First and Last name. She also couldn't issue the card with his middle name because she said it had to be exactly as written on the I-94. I agree with Old Dom that many of the workers in small local offices have little experience with K1s and people have so many different experiences at their various offices.

I'm not entirely sure what the DL office was going for. They said we needed her passport with I-94, her receipt from the I-485 application, and her receipt from SS saying that we'd applied. I really don't know what they were searching for in the computer, and to be honest, I don't think they knew either.

As for the exact name thing, perhaps I'll mention that when I call them tomorrow. Thank you very much for the input!
