Which is why American tourists that TRY to speak local languages get extra points for trying. People react positively when I try Japanese in Japan, French in France, and American in England.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Hey I'm down. Its almost 60 and muddy. I think I'll look for a pickup game made of a good mix of rich kids and illegals a little later. Soccer or football... as long as its that round ball... although American football is just as fine with the right combo of amigos.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

que dice???

Para español presione 2

that totally irks some folks

They shouldn't press # 2 then, it's not my fault that they are not bilingual

Nor is it your fault that they're dumba$es. Happens everyday in the telcom industry.

aye aye captain like everybody is born speaking english

They cannot tell me that English native speakers don't do the same in other countries (try to speak in their native language), when I used to live in France I saw it all the time.

American tourists trying to communicate with policeman on the streets of Paris:

-"Excuse meeee where is the Eiffel Tower???" "Excuse meee sir you speak english??"

Policeman:

"Je ne parle pas Anglais madame, on parle francais en France desole"

Tourist:

"Ohhh my Good honey I can't believe they don't speak English!"

This is exactly why people should learn to speak a secondary language. If not for your own personal improvement, you get higher pay at many jobs.

I don't see how someone could move to a country with no grasp of the local language beforehand.

However, I think if you are going to be a permanent resident in the U.S. you should be required to learn english.

sure enuf. i may not be able to write french, but the acadian i learned to speak when living in louisiana has made me more effective in dealing with quebecois. the chinese was good in china, too. the spanish was useful in south america. lots of travel opportunities for a guy that is multilingual.

my daughter, who is superfluent in french and was a teaching assistant in college french laughs at my cajun speak, but works for a company that has several significant french customers, and manages their french accounts.

If you only want tourists to travel where they are fluent in the local tongue you're shutting out a lot of people. There is a difference between being a tourist, living there longer or living abroad for the rest of your life.

When someone jumps over a fence or floats in on an innertube at midnight with a pocket full of stolen and/or fraudulent ID...what do you expect? Fvcking miracles? ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
