when i saw the title of your post...that show was the first thing i thought of. it's "The United States of Tara." i'm hooked. i think the program is extreme and unlikely to be tolerated and played along with in real life, but definitely a cool show.

DSM4 still lists it as a diagnosis, but many health care professionals in the field are sceptical. one of my personalities was married to a clinical practicioner who i met during her grad school process. she was a trust fund baby with 2 post grad degrees, working on 3rd. not too smart, but well funded. i tutored her through her program, and was her mirror for years thereafter. she indicated that nobody in the south central PA wellspan system took this diagnosis seriously.

i am skeptical myself..having worked with several..i think, it can be real but certainly when the film and book Sybil came out..there were many new cases..also, i think media reinforcement of certaind disorders leads to allot of self-diag, and like Cooley theory....what is reinforced and preceived as real becomes real in its' consequences..

I believe it does exist. I have never seen anyone I knew who actually had it though.

I do know that it is not something you are born with- it is always the result of some sort of trauma. It is a sort of defense mechanism, a little extreme, but if the mind can't handle certain things- it will find a way.

Do love the show though! Toni Collette is fabulous.

Yes, the show is great! I originally only wanted to see it bc my name is Tara....then became addicted to it bc she is sooooo funny!!
