Missouri Requires S.S. card for Marriage Liscense?

In some information I found on a nearby courthouses requirements for getting a marriage liscense it states this:

Proof of social security number is required at the time of application. A social security card or other valid document will be accepted

Now I thought many here had got married prior to getting their Social Security Card?

Will that apply only to me? Or is their a different law on this for the State of Missouri?

It does depend on the state you're in. I found information on a website purporting to explain regulations state by state which said that SSN was needed in Montana in order to get marriage licence. But we checked with the clerk of court who said he only needed to record it if I actually had one. So we got the licence the last time I visited John before getting the k1. Again validity depends on the state. In Montana we had six months.

My friend married a man from Canada last year here in MO and didn't need a social. They just took info from his passport. I'm not sure if things have change though.

In New Jersey our application said the same thing but when I called to set up an appointment (our town was so small that only one person issued marriage licenses, and only by appointment) she said that if one person was not a US citizen they would use the passport number instead. So even though the application said you need a SSN, that wasn't actually the case.

According to some of our resident experts, it's easier to get the SSN before getting married if you are a K-1 holder, then go and get a new one after getting married. You need the SSN card anyway, so it shouldn't hurt for you to go ahead and get one.
