I find the Canadians tend to pronounce things the way a European would. If we were in Italy they would say pass-ta. If we were in England they would say pass-ta. In Canada I have heard it both ways, but mostly pass-ta. Pahhh-sta is possibly the American influence. ?

I guess my vent is the people who post in response to other people's problems on the board with either "I don't believe it" or "That was stupid, you should have done this instead".

I see a lot of wild sounding stories on here, especially in the Major Family Changes section, but I tend to take even the more elaborate sounding ones at face value until proven otherwise. A lot of people here seem to forget that real life IS crazy sometimes, and it depresses me to see people who respond to a post with something like "I don't believe this post because it sounds so dramatic, so I'm going to post nasty things in the thread". If you think a thread is fake, it seems to me the easiest thing to do is just ignore it, because it's not hurting you any and you shouldn't waste your time on it. What's the worst that happens, someone spends a few precious minutes posting well wishes or some advice? What do you get out of it otherwise? Nobody is going to hand you a trophy and it never impresses me. It just makes you sound nasty, egotistical, and petty. Whatever YOU think, there may be a soul in trouble honestly asking for help, so if you can't or won't believe it, just please keep it to yourself.

Then there are the people who will post asking for help with the process they're going through. I don't see the point in the people who respond to these questions with a lot of chastising and finger-waving. Yes, okay, maybe they should have done this sooner, or a different way, but if that's ALL you're going to post, don't bother. They're trying to deal with the problem NOW, not spend their time rending their garments over what happened. What, YOU never made a mistake in your life? Imagine if something terrible happened to you, and instead of offering advice or merely sympathy, everyone just scolded you for it? Again, it just seems petty and needless, stroking your own ego.

I'm sorry if this post was too negative. These things have just been sort of disheartening to me lately, even though a lot of VJ users are kind, thoughtful people. I just needed to get this off my chest.

This is an interesting one. I always said paw-sta because my mums Italian. But most of my friends growing up said Paa-sta. Here in Jersey, almost half the population seems Italian so they all say paw-sta.

Don't really know which one is right. Guess it depends on how European your neighbourhood is.

Yea my husband is italian and he says pawsta.

In Ireland they saw pass-ta - I was teasing the American's (including hubby) that they have to say pass-ta since we out-weighed the pawsta folks =p

My wife says "paa-stah" too whereas I say "paah-stah." Doesn't bug me.

What does irritate me a little is when my wife says "southern" She pronounces the word like "south-urn" and I say "suh-thurn." I've never heard her way of saying it, even in the northern states. I'd like to know if that's a Canadian pronunciation or if she's just saying it incorrectly.

I never heard pasta pronounced as PASS-ta until I started dating my husband. Now of course I say it that way because that is how I always heard it growing up in the US. But I've also always just assumed that is close to the Italian pronunciation as well. I don't speak Italian, and I have to admit I am not really fluent in any language other than English, despite being able to utter at least a curse word or two in 12 different languages and being able to swear somewhat proficiently in 3, so I could be wrong on this, but I've never heard of any language other than English even having the a sound in pass. Which would make loan words from other languages (like pasta or garage) should be pronounced with the ah sound, and not the a as in Pass sound.

But there are probably plenty of loan words we anglicize, so really, it's just two different pronunciations. Kind of like you say po-TAY-to, I say po-TAH-to, that kind of thing. Whatevah.

Hubby calls a garage a garadge (like rhymes with Madge). He's originally British, so I'm not sure how having British parents affects his pronunciation. I am from Western New York State, where most people call soda "pop," but have always called it "soda," as do my parents (raised on the east cost by immigrant parents). I made a conscious choice to follow their version rather than the local version when I was a teenager. With the local accent, "pop" sounds like "pap." That's just too nasty to contemplate.

I tend to pronounce words the way they would in the originating country.... especially if I have travelled there. Italians tend to keep their vowels short so they say pass-ta.
