It's RIDONKULOUS!

I don't care how much money you have, that much money shouldn't be spent on a wedding. The things is, the girls mother is a member here so she gets a discount on the food and the ballroom rental is free. So I don't even know where I would start figuring out where she is paying that kind of cash for a wedding. Ugh and the events planner is soo kissing her a$$. So pathetic. Everyone who comes in is special not just her. I wouldn't even call it special, I'd call it stupid. No one is going to notice your platinum trimmed plates from Milan missy.

 I'd rather save that money for the honeymoon.

@ Nev - Just out of curiosity - have you had contact with the school counselor or social worker?

I can't believe I missed that Sentinel was DeadPoolX ... totally over my head. I guess I just thought, wow his writing style seems so similar to DPX .... I am clueless! LOL

Yes I have before... she was not exactly on my side with things in the past. Wanted Ethan tested for ADD a couple of months ago and basically sat there in the school meeting advocating the use of pills and what wonders it had done for her son.

I could go back to her about this but she and I just didn't get along that one day. I don't know if she'd hold the past against me or what. I am just weary.

Awww that sucks. I remember working with many wonderful school counselors, but there was one in particular who I would just get into it with because she thought everyone had ADHD and advocated for meds ... which made the school liable and got her into hot water for offering medical advice. I'm just wondering, was it a school counselor or school social worker? (I just really hate it when social workers are idiots, puts a bad name on our profession :P )

idiots come in all professions,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

She is the counselor.

I am hoping the principal calls me tomorrow. I came home and read over the story again and even called up my MIL to ask her what she thought and she couldn't believe it was deemed offensive by his teacher.

It really is just a few paragraphs out of his creative writing book... here listen.. I am going to copy it...

God Bless Africa

When I go places I always see God Bless America. Everybody wants God to bless this country and take care of this country. I think God is busy blessing and helping the countries who need it the most like in Africa and the Middle East.

I don't think America should ask God to bless it all the time because God is busy with countries who need him more. I don't think America should keep asking for something it already has. Why don't we ask God to bless the whole world so that everyone has a chance? Why does America ask for so much of God's help?

Now if you ask me America does not need help. America is fine. The rest of the world is not. There is a lot of problems in Africa and other places. Places you have never heard of and places we should all be helping. I think we should change it to: "God Bless Africa and God Bless the whole world" I think God would like that too.

He's 10 years old okay guys go easy on him. :P

Honestly?

I think it shows a heck of a lot of critical thinking and good logic. That should be applauded regardless of the topic!

As an aside I think he's got great insight there! Our pastor JUST mentioned this point a few weeks ago in his sermon.

Wow, your little boy is more altruistic than most adults I know. He should be encouraged to think about big issues in his 10-year-old kind of way. And if that offends his teacher's jingoistic sensibilities, she should meet my dad. Whenever politicians finish speeches with an apparently obligatory (and seemingly not very heartfelt because it's so ubiquitous) "God bless America!" he says, "Why? Did we sneeze?" I'd get censored if I told you what he said to Dan Quayle's speech at the 1988 R convention about family and freedom and something else with an F. My dad came up with a 4th F he felt J. Danforth left out. You can probably guess.

Well thank you guys, I am not crazy at all then. I don't think its offensive and maybe she's offended that he would ask god to bless the middle east? I don't know. I asked her what was offensive and she said that the whole thing was offensive. She didn't really pick out a part that tugged at her.

If you're going to call it offensive then tell me how it offends you, and why it offends you. Thats all I want to know.

Wow, it is crazy how much people have spent on weddings. Hubby and I paid for much of ours. My mom also helped out. My dad makes wine (as a hobby, but he is excellent, has been written up newpapers) and he gave us all the wine for our wedding. My hubby I think was a little hurt because he said his parents gave his sisters $10,000 each when they married and nothing to my hubby. I'm not sure if it is because he is a boy. Hubby has tried to rationalize it by realizing that his parents' financial situation has changed, when sisters married, dad was working and making big bucks. When we married, dad was retired, doing well financially but not having the excess of money he used to.

Okay, talking about wedding costs has made me need to vent about this:

I admit I was annoyed with his family for not contributing anything for our wedding. Traditionally, the groom's family pays for the rehearsal dinner if they pay for something. We paid for it. We didn't get a wedding present from his family. Okay, before everyone jumps on how selfish I sound, the reason it bothered me was that my hubby's youngest sister, who is a really nice person but an alcoholic and not always the most financially responsible person ... well, my husband's parents bought her plane ticket to come, a bus ticket for her while in the states to travel from NH to CT, and then gave her spending money. So, they do all that for her, yet give us nothing for a gift. I feel bad for hubby because he feels like he is not as valued, but then tries to justify their behavior to make himself feel better. They have always enabled her. For years, they allowed her to live rent free in a house they owned. Argh! And I really like her, except for the enabling piece.

That is pretty insightful for a creative writing assignment from a 10 year old. Good job to him!

I am finding, talking about things with my Fiance, that Americans are VERY patriotic. If I mention to him that their health care system in the US really leaves something to be desired as it is not really accessible to everyone if you don't have any $ or insurance through work, he will bluntly tell me that the US is the best place to be in the world and it has the best health care system......etc. I can give him all sorts of examples until I am blue in the face about why a universal health care system, like every other country in the world has is way better for everyone, and he will just stick to his guns the the US is best.

I think alot of Americans (most but not all) don't see outside of their country and have teh same beliefs that everything about the US is perfect and everyone wants to be like them So....perhaps his teacher is overly patriotic and has a closed mind about how other people from different places view things that the US does.

Still all in all....odd that she would find anything offensive in what your son wrote, as there isn't anything offensive there.

Nev, not only is that NOT AT ALL OFFENSIVE, that is well written and extremely sensitive and thoughtful. Your son is amazing :)

I know I keep harping on this, but you might try to connect with the school social worker, if there is one, and cross your fingers he or she is more understanding and not just following the school's party line. Your son needs an advocate in the system in addition to you. Argh! This makes me think I DON'T want to try to get back into the school system, but stay working in mental health.

Well exactly. If the kids write book reviews and are asked to give an opinion on the book, wouldn't she expect them to explain why they like or dislike it? D'oh!
