I think it's funny A-Roid's salary is almost the same as the entire Philadelphia Flyers team.

You know you chose the wrong sport when...

Ugh I know. Its just ridiculous... And he's way overpayed for what he does, really. I think the MLB would really benefit from some type of NHL style salary cap. It would help the smaller teams that have the talent but are held back by their resources.

The NHL only had to implement a salary cap because of their lack of success. Salary caps do not create parity among teams.

Because of who's lack of success? The NHL's?

Salary caps don't care parity among teams, and I'm not taking about making all teams even, that would ruin the nature of the sport. I'm talking about preventing a team from holding a monopoly on talent because they can afford to sick billions of dollars into players salaries. Regardless of why it was implemented, in the NHL the salary cap has led to a different distribution of talented players among teams. It hasn't ruined the spot, it has enhanced it.

The yankees don't have a monopoly on talent. They simply have a better business model that generates money outside of baseball which in turn allows them to spend more money on scouting, management, and their whole front office team. If you have a salary cap, the yankees will still spend that on off the field personnel, thus perpetuating the inequity.

As to enhancing the sport, that is debatable. Players make less money, there is less t.v. coverage, and the sport as a whole is less profitable. There might be a few more teams that are legitimately competitive, but does anyone really think that neither Detroit or Pittsburgh are going to win?

Well to answer your last point first yes. I always think a team other than Detriot or Pittsburg is going to win because I'm optimistic! And the avs are hot right now! A girl can dream :P

The Yankees have more than a better business model. They also have a billionaire owner who throws green at the team like its candy and attracts young talents with the prospect they can earn more money here than anywhere in North America. The Yankees can spend all they want on off field personnel, you can stop that, we aren't talking about working miracles, were talking about doing something to make the sport more interesting and competative, which the salary cap has accomplished in the NHL. In my humble opinion...

I have a friend who works for the Yankees finance department. The steinbrenners do spend a lot of money, but in the end, it is a for profit business. Their business model allows them to spend as much as they do on the field and in the front office. If they didn't have the talented personnel in the front office, to determine what players to sign, they would be like.... well, they'd be like the L.A. Dodgers. The Dodgers make nearly as much money, however, they don't spend the money on scouts, player development etc. They end up with a $150 million payroll and nothing to show for 20 years.

With a salary cap, you'll end up with a situation like what Formula One racing was for several years. You limit how much you can put in the cars, but then you've got Ferrari and MacLaren spending $300 million on outside testing, development and financing and then a team like Jordan who spends the minimum to field a team. You can limit how much the Yankees can pay players, but you can't make a team like the Padres spend more to be competitive. In the end, all a salary cap does is increase the owners profits and decrease the earning potential of players.

Just not true Amanda. Sorry. It isn't a part of ALL baseball teams. A lot sure, but not all. :P

And I played baseball throughout most of my childhood. Hockey to you, is like baseball to me. I am insanely passionate about it.

I'm just not passionate about hockey, though. I played soccer, field hockey, badminton, hockey, ringette, volleyball, all competitively. I'm an all around sports fan. I understand most of the fundamentals of every sport..cricket, rugby...australian rules football...I've always watched and played a lot of sprots.

No one can prove that steroids is not a part of all baseball teams. You can't prove it and neither can I. In order for hitters to compete in today's game, many of them are taking some sort of enhancement. Once one person does it, it becomes a fire. I don't agree with it, but it's pretty widespread now. It's not human to get as big as some of these guys are...it's just not physically possible. When some up the competition, other guys have no other choice but to join them in order to compete on that level. Many players have now spoken out about this, from various teams. I don't think you can say that the Phillies are 100% clean. I really don't think any team is.

I understand what you are saying about having these conglomerate franchises that consistently win and it gets old. But I think these franchises go through cycles much like a lot of things in life. They win for 5 years or 8 years, then they have to rebuild again and different franchises start taking the cake. Look at the leafs or the habs. Same deal.

Also, a lot of people always talk about bandwagon jumpers and give them a hard time. My attitude is, who cares? If someone wants to support only a winning team, that's up to them and no one is to judge that. Maybe the winning team makes the fan feel good in some way. People who know English Football always say that about Man U. Their fan base is so large, that you now have to join the Man U club to qualify for tickets. They then do a draw at the beginning of the season to give every club holder 2 games during that season.

I don't know. It reminds me of illegal VS legal debate here on VJ a little.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

LoL, sports teams love bandwagon fans. They are the ones who buy all that merchandise that most wouldn't think of. I once saw a catalogue that Man Utd. sent out to only the Asian market. It was nearly 250 pages of #######. Not the normal ####### either, this was special edition #######. But then again, i've thought Man Utd. were ####### since Eric Cantona retired  Come on Mighty Reds!!!

Yeah well, I'm best friend with Michael Schumacher and he says you're wrong :P

Well, I can't really fight that. I don't have any inside lines. Everyone knows the Steinbrenners throw money at the team like no tomorrow. You know the old expression, you need to spend money to make money. They have a benefit that most MLB teams simply don't have. Of course they are a for profit business. With all the people showing up to games and wearing Yankees gear they better be making a profit. And when you have money you can buy off great talent weather it be on the field or in the office. The Yankees have fans, they make money legitimately, but it doesn't make it any less frusterating for a fan in a smaller franchise, which was my point to begin with.

You can't really compare baseball to formula 1, it is a different animal. They have a hard time constraining team costs because formula 1 has and always will be about who has the most money and who can come out with the newest, greatest piece of technology. Thats what makes Formula 1 great (it definately isn't the close racing...) Forumla 1 also has major swings of who is great and who is not. You say Ferrari and McLaren? Ferrari and McLaren both performed poorly this year. Now its Brawn and Renault. Next year it might be someone else. It changes all the time.

If a salary cap simply increases owners profits then there is a major problem with how the team is being run and you can't police or control that, absolutely not. And Earning potential of players? I hardly feel bad for them.

Thats pretty much all I have to say about that. But arguing with you is fun Rob :P

I'm scared, Peachey said the chili she's making is coming from her brain.

I don't want to eat her brain.

*resumes hiding in his hole again*

Montreal Interviewer: "What do you have in common with each other?"

Peachey: "We're REALLY weird."

Montreal Interviewer (incredulously to me): "Do you agree with that?"

<I think back to several days before the interview. Driving through the country, passing a field with cows...>

Peachey: "MOOOO! MOOOOO! Does this make me weird?"

Me: "No, well yes. Here, let me roll down the windows so they can hear you better!"

Peachey: "MOOOOO!!!!"

<back to interview>

Me: "Yes, yes I do."
