I guess it depends on what you want in a machine. It' not so much the PC I hate, it's windows that I despise.

Oh and i recently upgraded my mac book. So they are upgradeable. Not in the same sense though as a PC would be upgradeable... but you can upgrade the operating system.

I think if you spent 10 minutes in the Mac Store here in Santa Monica, you'd go crush every apple product you own for fear of becoming one of the hipster pod people there

I stay out of the mac store for that reason.

Oh believe me I know the hipster mac people, my husband is one and he works with a bunch of them.

And i can make fun of mac people too... every single mac store is the same, but you get a mac person and you guys go out and they just can't pass one, they have to go in and oogle over the stuff in there.

I am like the outcast mac user.

Aw... BermyCat...

I hear you -- I have fears just like that. I have a good job here in Canada, am no longer a spring chicken fresh to the job market and the economy in the US is rough, to say the least. I have those worries too.

Don't worry, sister... it'll work out nad I doubt HIGHLY that your husband's happiness is 100% hinged upon your finding a job.

But I hear you. I will be in the very same boat shortly and it fills me with panic...

:)

I have absolutely no idea what my life is going to look like in six months. I've no clue what state we're going to end up in and whether I'll be able to find work there.

Phil's talking about goin back to school to finish his Master's. He's found the perfect project ... in Dallas. He'd get to do something he's really passionate about. If he didn't have to worry about me, he'd go back to the student lifestyle in a second. He does have to worry about me though. Now I feel like his happiness depends on whether I can find a job in Dallas in a hurry. Who on Earth is going to hire an immigrant who has been out of work for a year and lives in another state?

Who on Earth is going to hire an immigrant who has been out of work for a year and lives in another state?

Like Rob/Mel says, if they look at your resume and spend even ten seconds processing the information in their minds, they'll disregard the immigrant / out of work aspect. If you get to the interview stage of virtually any job, the fact that you went through the immigration process is a HUGE selling point: not only does it show that you are dedicated (spending over half a year pursuing something), but it also shows that you are capable of handling the stress of lots of paperwork, ups and downs etc.

In my situation, I was laid off of my last job earlier this month...and it was a huge surprise to me, as I'm a good worker and have never been laid off (or let go in any fashion...) in my life. But there's no way I can get another job right now, as it should only be a few months before I'm legal to be in the States. So when I have a job interview down there, I'll make that point very clear: the reason I didn't look for work during this time is because I didn't want to be hired under false pretenses (i.e.: that I intended to stay with a company here for a long time etc.). That should show integrity, at least.

It's all in how you put yourself across. If you look at it like you're "an immigrant who has been out of work for a year and lives in another state", then you're doomed before you start. However, if you look at it like you're someone who dedicated herself to a lengthy immigration process to garner a new beginning in a land of opportunity...well, you might have more luck!

Speaking of luck...good luck!

It's kind of hard for me to avoid. I have some friends who are mac fanboi's. They simply will not shut up about them and go on and on about it. When I try to tell them that I could build a far superior performing machine myself for considerably less money, they tell me that I don't get it. So I guess i'm not one of the cool kids who puts Apple stickers on my car . To make matters worse, my in-laws have all become Apple fanboi's (and fangrrls ). They love apple because it is so easy. I can respect that, but then they come back with the fanboi responses that macs are invulnerable to virus, blah blah blah. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPod and will probably get a mac laptop at some point, I guess I am resisting the hipster trend with every fibre of my being.

I always compare a hardcore mac user to a Philadelphia Eagles fan...

You know maybe I'd watch the game if the fans weren't such d1cks.

I used to say the same thing about macs... "Maybe I'd switch if the users weren't such idiots"

But alas my husband bought me a mac book for my 30th birthday and I haven't looked back since. If I do go PC again I'd consider maybe moving to a new operating system... but again, I am afraid of zee change.

My neighbor(lives on the same floor as me) just went over to my place to complain to Varba how he's taking up the visitors spot FOREVER again (2 weeks). Apparently another neighbor parked on the street next to a fire hydrant (yes, it's against the law, but don't call the city) and wants to get the car towed or ticketed (B|itch move IMO).

She then says to Varba that it's because of him that she can't smoke in the house anymore (it's a non smoking building) and she knows it's us who complained (even tho I've told her it wasn't me, and I know who it was, but I'm not gonna tell her) and then called him an a$$hole. This is the lady that wanted me to tell her when I was giving my notice so that her friend could move in. This is also someone who had a very loud party last THURSDAY night until 2AM and I didn't complain.

I'm so glad I'm moving soon...

Montreal Interviewer: "What do you have in common with each other?"

Peachey: "We're REALLY weird."

Montreal Interviewer (incredulously to me): "Do you agree with that?"

<I think back to several days before the interview. Driving through the country, passing a field with cows...>

Peachey: "MOOOO! MOOOOO! Does this make me weird?"

Me: "No, well yes. Here, let me roll down the windows so they can hear you better!"

Peachey: "MOOOOO!!!!"

<back to interview>

Me: "Yes, yes I do."

Oh my god!!! L'enfer c'est les autres, that's for damn sure, eh?

I hate, hate, hate living in a building with other people! I'm sorry that you live right near such a douchebag-ette, Peachy! She sounds like an ahole. I think in my brownstone walk-up (there are 4 apartments) the only douchebags are the landlords. What can you do when said landlords party like frat boys every weekend? nothing. Sit back and suck it up.

Here's to all of us moving out crapland like that soon enough.

Sorry Peachy -- some people need a life, eh?

I hate having crappy neighbors, they can really make your living experience horrid. I have had my share. :(

My boss is a pretty cool person, she's funny and she's never really mean about stuff, but sometimes she just gets so wound up and turns into a whirly bird. When she starts getting like this I want to crawl under a table because she'll stop whatever she's doing and decide that it's time to reorganize files and shelves and everything. Why is this annoying? Because this is what she says when she does it:

"Hey Nevada email so and so and ask them what they want to do with these labels, we don't use them! Let's get them out of here! Hey email so and so and ask them what they want to do about these old files, I think we can send them to storage, but I am not sure, ask so and so if they have room down in their office... hey what are these markers doing here? These should be over there... figure out who put these markers here..."

She'll go on and on.... and on. It's just a little annoying.
