you should see if a store near you sells ketchup made with sugar instead of corn syrup..

I was so happy when I found ketchup made with real sugar at our local market here and it was a big bottle for under 2 bucks..... although the other day I went to buy some and they were all sold out :P

I do think that Trader Joes has it.. but I like the conversations it brings up when people look at the bottle and are like ummmmm what is that? (referring to the french) I like messing with people's minds :)

hahah Those mafia wars are blowing up my page! It's hard to find what people are actually up to.

Have you every lost multiple things in one week and just can't get your head around HOW you would lose them? I just lost my FOURTH blue tooth ear piece for my phone and I lost my mailbox key....all in a matter of a few days...

Next to lose: my head.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

Ruh roh, that almost sounds condescending !

Anyway, yes, modified sugar is modified sugar by any other name.

Now I can't speak for EVERYONE who has ever complained about HFCS - this is just my personal take. I don't have a big beef with HFCS in general, I don't think it's a great thing but big loads of sugar are probably not a great thing anyway. That said, I avoid them when I can.

Here is the thing. In the United States of America, it would seem from a consumer viewpoint (the consumer being me) that there are many many items that contain HFCS that we do not see here in Canada.

For example, if I went to buy a can of tomato paste today, I guarantee you it would not have sugar added to it. Not HFCS, or glucose/fructose. If I want a can of pop, I will note that the ingredient after carbonated water is sugar (G/F right after it - but not the second largest ingredient)

If I look at the ingredients in my kraft peppercorn ranch salad dressing, there is sugar.

It's kind of akin to comparing something like butter to margarine - butter is just that - butter, nothing more or less (except maybe some salt), while margarine is a processed item. Some people choose to be ok with HFCS or fructose/glucose, some prefer pure sugar. Neither person is wrong or right, it's a personal choice based on taste and what they deem to be 'better' for whatever reason (be it the way the body digests it or the taste alone).

Oh and since this is the vent thread, a couple of other things about HFCS I want to say.

I don't think there is enough evidence yet, or not that I have read (because I don't feel like it) for us to know exactly how the body digests HFCS (by any name)

Also, HFCS is a cheap filler for food, which is why it is in almost everything in the U.S. - not because it really adds anything to the product but because it is a cheap filler, why waste good manufacturing dollars on trying to improve the taste of something when you can just add some HFCS!

I found most products to be way too sweet, even bread. Now on the surface that doesn't really seem to be a big deal, so trailmix finds the bread to sweet - too bad! Well if we take that a step further, is this part of the fattening of America? Is it not a problem that everything is over sweetened, which it probably does not seem to be to the consumer because people in the United States are now used to the cheap filler.

Each tablespoon of Heinz ketchup sold in the U.S. has 5 more calories in it than the equivalent Heinz ketchup in Canada. That is huge in my estimation. Think about all the ketchup that is consumed each day, then multiply that by 5 calories per tablespoon. That's just 1 product!

I wasn't trying to come across as condescending. I just didn't want to bring it up because it's a whole can of worms that *I* wasn't wanting to open.

What can of worms - that people here are too ignorant to know what processed sugar is? That's the part that came across as condescending.

Just pointing out how I read it.
