This is not an angry rant but a sad one.

We took our new little kitten to the vet yesterday and he tested positive for FIV. Most likely, his mom was exposed to it and he just has some antibodies from her. Unfortunately, it is possible that he has the disease and could pass it to my existing cats. We'd have to test him in a few months and probably keep testing him until he's six months old to know for sure. Since we can't really keep him locked in one room for the next four months, we've decided that we can't keep him.

There's no real evidence that FIV shortens an indoor cat's life. They just don't get exposed to enough things to get really sick. However, we're not willing to risk our other cats' health. Kathryn, Phil and I are trying to find him another home. Preferably one were he'll be an only cat.

I'm really sad about this. I've been working with him over the last two days and he's socializing really well and now I've got to give him up.

Here's a picture of him:

I couldn't figure out how to get the picture to show up in the post.

That's really sad, I'm sorry to hear about your kitten :( We just found out the other day that our cockerspaniel possibly has an auto immune disease, and if you're anything like me it pretty much tears you apart since my animals are like children to me, with not having any children of my own, so I know how you feel.

I'm sure if you post his story in the newspaper, and maybe call up the local animal shelters to see if they have any good ideas (I know there are some cat rescues out there that may have some sort of means to take care of sick kittens,) you'll be able to find him a new forever home. There are some serious cat fanatics out there who I'm sure would jump at the chance to help a kitten in need if they seen his story in the newspaper. Keep your spirits up, I'm sure something will come along (F)

I'm heartbroken about this too. It seemed like such a perfect solution all around and I know he would have had the absolute best home with Catherine and Phil. So, we are working our various networks to try and find this little guy a forever home. It could very well turn out that he doesn't have FIV - the majority of kittens who test positive because of ingesting antibodies in their mother's milk test negative once they stop nursing and the antibodies are out of their system by the 6 month mark. However, Catherine and Phil have two other cats who are negative and on the off chance that the kitten is one of the few who does get the illness from their mother they can't risk infecting their cats. So, if anyone of you know of anyone in the Atlanta area who would like to give this little guy a home, please let one of us know. He really is a sweetheart.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I wish I could take him for you, he is so cute, but unfortunately we're going to be on the other side of the continent and Wes' roommate also has 2 cats that are negative. I will keep the kitten in my thoughts though, and hopefully both of you wonderful ladies can find him a good solution.

OMG... my future MIL is coming here today to spend the night. The house is NOT ready for guests, let alone her. We don't have enough room for him to unpack completely in the bedroom/closet, and clothes are boxed, barreled, and stuffed all over the place. I haven't been able to go to the grocery store to get things for dinner tonight, haven't showered, haven't finished cleaning up the moving of stuff in the computer. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay... *sigh* ... I feel a little better. Okay, not much, but a little. *&^$@$^@($^@*%&^ :help:

Just remember, she is your future MIL - not an inspector

Instead of cooking dinner - how about getting some nice stuff from the deli - or bringing in a nice dinner :)

We're all standing around and my MIL will ask: "Okay what does everyone want to do?"

Ethan: "I want to go to the haunted house"

Me: "Ethan wants to go the haunted house"

Mike: "I don't care.."

My brother in law Kevin - "Thunder mountain"

MIL: "Okay Kevin wants to go on thunder mountain"

*everyone goes to thunder mountain*

That's nice. I'm sure your BIL is a real charmer, now, as an "adult". Way to go, Mom. icon2.gif

Also he gets mad at Ethan... a lot. My son is a talker, he talks and talks and as his mother I have learned to filter him out a lot of the time, you know the: "Yea... uh huh... wow" and nodding along to let him know I hear him even if I don't...

OMG, my husband and I stopped in at a Wendy's on our drive home from NC one time, and there was this father with this little kid.... about 7 or 8 years old. Well, the kid never stopped talking from the moment they approached the door until the moment they left. They sat down at the table behind us and he chattered away through the entire meal, without his father having to put in any effort whatsoever into the conversation. He just sat there and ate. The only time his father spoke was to say "Let's go" as he got up and opened the door for him. This made the little boy pause for a minute, and then the next words out of his mouth were "And another thing..... ". OMG, we HOWLED.

Awwwwww. That's so sad. He's such a cute kitty, too. I hope he finds a new home soon.

I'm sure she'll understand, July. Maybe she'll even help with the unpacking! If I was the MIL, I totally wouldn't care about the mess or where I slept.... I would just be happy to spend family time. And I agree with Trailmix..... just get something in.

Sprailenes, I totally missed your post.

That just sucks - I would just say no, personally.

Yea I have decided its just best to say no. There's always some sort of drama and I just don't like mixing drama with the "happiest place on earth". My husband is actually on my side with this one which is good.

I wish I wasn't allergic to cats because I would come get that cat even though I'm all the way in Jersey. Kathryn I still think you need to start some sort of shelter or something because you are absolutely amazing with these animals.

We have a new plan for the kitten. We're going to keep him isolated with limited, supervised play time with the other cats. He'll get tested bi-monthly. I'v been emailing vet schools and the consensis is that he's very unlikely to have FIV and would have to bite one of my other cats very deeply to transmit it even if he had it.

He's so sweet, we've decided to try and keep him.

argh, so yesterday the hubby and I had a little BBQ, just some hamburgers, corn on the cob etc.. when he was done cooking he came inside and said he had heard the neighbors talking.. he said they were complaining about the smoke from the BBQ and wondering how long he was going to be out there etc... my first thought was , if the smoke is bothering you, shut your flippin door...

then I told hubby that we should go and outside and start complaining about their loud music, their arguments , the kids that hang out outside till late in the evening and all their blasted lawn furniture strewn all over the front...
