I thing a long commute really does affect quality of life, so I think a new job will probably really help Amanda. You have lots of experience, and even in a recession, there are jobs out there!! Companies always need good people.

My vent: I'm pretty sure I'm losing hearing in my right ear. I have a Dr. appointment next week, but I'm not really sure that I can be helped. I mean I guess eventually I can get a hearing aid or something. I guess it will just depend on how fast I lose it :(

It really does. My commute wasn't as long, about 1 hour each way, but it gets exhausting and really does affect other areas of you life.

It may be a recession, but companies are still hiring. I guess you just have to look harder than normal. I am being choosy with the places I'm applying, no longer than a half hour drive or train ride into the city. I just don't want to deal with a long commute anymore, and I won't. I want to enjoy life and not come home, crash on the couch and repeat the next day.

Sapphire: Really!? That's horrible!! I had a hearing loss in my left ear for awhile, due to a terrible ear infection treated too late - it burst my eardrum. Overtime, it did return though.

Oh and you know what they say: If you have a job, it's easier to find a job!!

I'm hoping so!

Sapphire that's awful! I know I lost hearing in my ear for a week on vacation because I had such a bad sinus infection. It hurt bad but the not-hearing part was almost even worse. I hope you find out what it is and I hope there is something they can do.

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

That's awful Sapphire. I've had hearing loss for a long time now. I have Tinnitis, and have had it since I was about 14 or 15. Mine is just a constant ringing in my ears, I can't imagine losing my hearing altogether (which will eventually happen).

So I think I've had enough of my boss and my commute.

So now is when you start to find inventive ways to anonymously irritate your boss.

 We had a meeting today and I was questioning EVERYTHING she set up for one of our projects. She was getting so mad. B)

There is not a word in the english language that can effectively describe how much I detest her now though, for so many reasons.

I know we are in a recession, but I am now beginning to seek a job closer to where I live. (I've decided that she's part of my problem though and I can't take it any more )

You could always give the annoy-a-tron a whirl. I'm sure that'd drive your boss crazy! :innocent:

Sapphire, that sucks! I can't imagine how that must feel. I was born deaf in my left ear, so I can tell you that hearing with only one ear is pretty inconvenient at times, but it isn't so bad. Well, I guess I wouldn't know would I? I do have to say that I worry about losing the hearing in my good ear though. Hopefully it won't be anything too serious!

That sucks ATeam, glad you're able to overcome it.

So far my hearing is definitely still functioning - but I can tell when I'm on the phone using my right ear, that the quality is just not there. I use my right ear alot, and I talk on the phone every single night to my fiance for at least an hour, and I use my right ear predominantly, so I have a feeling is definitely contributing to it. Especially since we've been talking on the phone almost every night for like 8 years or something ridiculous. I mean luckily, we only have 10 more days of phoning, and we actually don't talk as long these days because we're both busy and tired. So hopefully whatever issues I'm having will go away once I'm not on the phone all the time.

I've felt this coming for a couple years now and my Dr. has always assured me that it's probably nothing and not to worry... but lately I've just had weird moments, like really really fast miniscule seconds of deafness and a slight pain. I try to lay off wearing headphones on my commute everyday and I try to use my other ear when I'm on the phone too.

Anyways, now that I've rambled on and on, I'm finished talking... :) haha

Sapphire, I can totally relate! When I was back in Canada we used to be on the phone literally all night long. I would wake up and my ear would be so sore. Not to mention the fact that my shoulder was killing me. I had such an issue with it that I couldn't lift my arm above my head. The chiropractor said it was pretty common, but boy did it ever hurt. As soon as I moved here and stopped being on the phone all of the time, my shoulder pain went away!

I hope that's all it is for you and that your ear starts to heal once you get down here!

Wow, two hours a day is huge! That's 21 days a year spent in the car (or bus or wherever)!

yep, commuting can suck. My wife can work "flex" hours, so were up before 0500 so she can beat the DC area traffic. No traffic, takes 45 minutes, but some days if she goes stays late, it can take up to 2.5 hrs!! Were most likely moving closer to her work, then i wil prob be the 1 with the long commute--that is if i ever get a job,lol Traffic sucks!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

OMG, that's terrible! I had tinnitus for almost a year, once, and I nearly went out of my MIND!!!!

Hope your hearing improves, Sapphire. Good thing you're moving soon so your ear will get a bit of a break.

Thats a great way to look at it. Amanda drives 1.5 hours each way so that's 3 hours a day in a car.

That's like me driving to Syracuse every day. That's insane to me.

I know of a woman in my complex who commutes to NYC every day. EVERY DAY! That's about a 1.5 hour drive without traffic and you just know that she's hitting traffic during her the times she commutes.

Yeah, it's terrible really - I mean of course most people have to commute, but unless you love your commute a lot - even if you move half an hour closer to work (based on a 2 hour commute a day) you would have an extra 10 days a year for fun stuff!

Before I started with IBM I worked for another company not far from where we lived (say a 15 minute commute) - what I would do is look for jobs that were interesting and then google them, if they weren't close, I didn't apply.

I get mad at this one traffic light in the morning that can make my drive to work a couple of minutes longer if I don't get to it on a green. My drive to work is 15 minutes. I am going to stop getting so upset with that poor light.

Not only that I imagine dealing with other drivers can be tiring as well, NJ is full of really bad drivers, though deep down I'd like to say I've seen the worst in Boston.

It was only Oakville to the Toronto airport, so with no traffic it was only 35 mins or so. But, when is there no traffic in Toronto, LOL so on average it did take an hour each way. God forbid if there was a snowstorm, forget it! It would take hours, just crawled all the way home. It made me so grumpy, I vowed to never do that again!

That's what I'm doing Tmix, looking up the companies address and if I see it's more than a half hour, I'm just not applying. I may be limiting my chances of getting a good job, but I don't care. I want a life!!

My commute right now is 1hr15 minutes on a good day and 1hr30 on a bad day - but all by bus/subway/streetcar, so no driving... and well, its not very fun at all. Especially since I usually work 8:30-6, so my days are over 12 hours long. Brutal.

I also vow never to commute longer than 40 minutes at my next job. I don't think I should have a problem, since we will intend to live in Queens. Although, never say never I guess.
