yay!

Fiance had his medical today and it looks like it went fine. Yet another step done in this journey :)

tday I mail him the I134 info and 4 complete folders of all the possible things he might need at the consulate interview...

Later on when I get complete info from him about the medical and (soon to be) consulate interview I'll be posting reviews on VJ for vj'ers who come after us.....

I can't believe we've actually gotten this far.

Nowadays when ppl I know get married who don't have to go through this process I wonder what they get stressed out about. They have time to arrange a date, get things organized for a traditional wedding....Sometimes I feel like I'm lucky... I know he and I are focused on being together, not on the stuff arranged around the wedding day.

Hope everyone has a great day!

S.

Hi!

I hope you are all well.

I married my american fiancee yesterday! YAY. I have a question for you all regarding name changes. Should i go ahead and change my australian passport with my married name or should i keep this in my maiden name? Im confused as to what i should do first.

Thanks!!!

Jodie

Hi Jodie,

First of all CONGRATULATIONS! We have been married almost 4 years and I have still not officially changed my name in Australia. To do this you need to lodge a change of name by deed poll because even though they recognise the marriage they do not recognise your change of name. I still travel with my passport in my previous name and I carry my marriage certificate and of course my greencard and book overseas flights in my previous name. You can only obtain a new australian passport in your married name after you have done the change by deed poll because you need the certificate. Hope this makes sense. Oh and yes I am slack but will do it before I need to renew my passport. I did speak to someone at the Australian Consulate in New York and they were very helpful, so maybe call your nearest Aus/Cons and they should be able to help you.

Hope this helps.

Susan.

Welcome to all the new comers and I hope you all have smooth journeys :)

Man this is nuts. I have 7 sworn affidavits, a letter from our last residence and the background check they did on Loke when he moved in, the new lease, tons of letters mailed to both of us and wedding invitations, etc... I have a letter from my bank on bonded paper stating that we have a shared savings account and it's current, copies of the greencard and EAD and even the medical cards. I asked for Loke to get a letter from human resourses at his work to state that he pays for the entire families medical insurance... what else? hmmmm I am wondering if I should make up a book of our trip to Perth. I have receipts and the plane tickets and photos and stuff. I may do that... I have a month before I file and I somehow managed to put myself into freak out mode.

LOL! Hi Rings.

I just filed to remove conditions and I didn't include any affidavits in this one. We'll see what happens. I got too lazy and impatient trying to chase people down after I read somewhere that affidavits were considered the weakest form of evidence and is really used when there is no other good supporting evidence. By the looks of what you have though, there is more than enough evidence to support your ongoing relationship! :)

I personally think that the pics of you and Loke will carry much more weight than the affidavits but like you said, it doesn't hurt to have them. Are they notarized? I am not 100% sure but I recall reading up that they should be notarized.

Just make sure to have "ongoing" evidence. I included about 20 or so pics showing us at 4-6 months intervals since we were reunited. We also had several bank statements over the last 2 years with both our names. The plane tix, itinerary, etc. with both your names together should do nicely as well. They just want to see financial and social mingling. Looks like you are good. I think we mailed a pound of evidence in the end LOL. Oh, tax returns too! I think that's a biggie. We've been filing jointly since so we included the last 2 returns and proof of deposits. Also, do you have a family plan for the phones? If so include those. I can see how the examiner would value these items highly.

Good luck!

Thanks vylex! I have been getting everything together. We have the signed lease and the medical cards where we pay for the family medical and everything. I did get all my affidavits signed and notarized. I don't have to file till next month so I am doing them anything just to be safe. I already have 7 of them and the rest of the friends, family and even the neighbors are going to do one. I wrote up this kick butt affivaditt that says we are all willing to testify before an immigration officer so I am sure if it's written right it will be useful. We don't have the cell phone plan because quite frankly I am cheap and I don't want to pay for a cell phone lol, but the energy bill is in both our names so I will send that as well. I am sending tons of junk lol.

I haven't changed my name either

for those of you that are Aussie citizens through naturalization you won't need to do a name change through deed poll but instead a name change for your citizenship, then you use that as proof to change your name on your passport
